Porsche 911 930 for Sale
Built by auto maker Porsche between the years 1975 and 1989, the Porsche 930 was a sports car known to the general public as the Porsche 911 Turbo. This was to become the automaker's top-of-the-range model for the whole duration of production. It was at the time of production the fastest car available in Germany.
The Porsche 911/930 History
Experiments by Porsche on their race cars with turbocharging technology began in the late 1960s. By 1972 they had started developing a Porsche 911 Turbo charged version. Originally, Porsche needed to produce the car so as to be in conformity with homologation regulations and had the intention of having the Porsche 911 Turbo marketed as a street legal race car. (/p)(p)As Porsche wished to take part in the 1976 racing season, they obtained FIA homologation for their Group 4 Porsche 911 Turbo on Dec 6th 1975 and on 5th May 1976, the 1,000th 1976 Turbo was completed. Ernst Fuhrmann then adapted the turbo-technology which was originally designed for the CAN-AM 917/30 car to the flat-six 3.0 litre (taken from the Carrera RS 3.0) to create what internally was dubbed as 930 by Porsche. (/p)(p)Simply badged by the automaker as "Turbo",the Porsche 930 debuted in October 1974 at the Paris Auto Show before it was put on sale during in the 1975 spring. In 1976, exports to the US started.
1978 Model
For 1978, Porsche made the initial and most significant modifications to the 930, enlarging the car’s engine to 3.3 litres as well as adding the air-to-air intercooler. The brakes were also upgraded to units like the ones used on the Porsche 917 race car.
Regulations changes in the US and Japan regarding emissions forced the withdrawal by Porsche of the 930 from those two markets in 1980. However, it remained, available in Canada.
1983 Porsche 930
In Europe, the 930 remained available and for the 1983 model year, a 330 PS performance option (243 kW; 325 hp) became available from Porsche on a build-to-order basis. The add-on came with a four-pipe exhaust system and an additional oil-cooler and modified rockers.
The 1984-86 Models
In the 1984 model year, Porsche brought out the fastest of the Porsche 930 Turbos. This car came with a 278 km/h top speed. Today, these are the cars models that are still in greatest demand. In 1986, Porsche re-introduced the 930 into the US and Japanese markets but with an emission-controlled engine. Porsche also introduced at the same time, the Cabriolet and Targa variants, both proving very popular.
End of Production
The 1989 Porsche 930 models were the first and last versions of the 930 featuring a 5-speed manual transmission and the G50 transmission. Production of the Porsche 930 was discontinued after the 1989 model year when it was replaced by the Porsche 964.
