It's svelte and modern, Bruno Sacco penned lines were more suited to an exciting, new age when it was eventually launched. Demand was high and owners often had a wait for several years for delivery. In 1997, Mercedes-Benz commemorated the 40th anniversary of the first 300 SL Roadster by offering two limited-edition models: Firstly, the SL 500 with exactly 500 models built and, much rarer, the SL 320 with only 250 units built. These cars were distinguished not only by their special paint options but also by an interior trim which was not available on other models. A particularly soft grey leather was used contrasting well to the royal maple interior trim, a truly unique wood with a marble-like appearance.

This example features the 3.2 litre, six-cylinder engine electronically governed to a top speed of 155mph through a five-speed, automatic transmission. The 40th Anniversary Special Edition is finished in the striking Vario Green/Blue and has been garaged by its current diligent keeper for the last ten years. In addition to a comprehensive history folder complete with many invoices and receipts, it benefits from its original owner's stamped-up book pack, wind deflector, dark blue soft top and matching hardtop (&stand).
