SLR is an abbreviation for "Sport Leicht Rennsport" (Sport Light Racing), a homage to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR which served as the car's inspiration. The car was offered in coupé, roadster and speedster bodystyles with the latter being a limited edition model and just 2,157 cars were produced in total.

The rear-drive Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren put its supercharged V8 behind the front axle. It was built around a carbonfibre tub, and featured carbon-ceramic brakes and the world’s first production car air brake. At 100km/h the rear spoiler automatically deploys at an angle of 10 degrees, and by 250km/h it’s generating an additional 78kg of downforce, 50kg of it directed to the rear wheels. A switch on the centre console increases the angle of attack to 30 degrees and the rear wheels get loaded up with another 44 kilos. Get on the brakes and the spoiler tilts to 65 degrees, acting as an airbrake but also increasing the total downforce to 167kg and balancing it almost evenly between the front and rear axles.

That supercharged 5.4-litre V8 engine puts out out an astonishing 626bhp and will see the car cover 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds. The hand-assembled specially reinforced all-alloy block features dry sump lubrication. This enables the bent eight to be slung lower in the chassis, improving handling, grip and roadholding.

A widely spaced five-speed automatic transmission translates the engine's brute force into motion. Steering-wheel-mounted buttons enable the driver to shift manually.

Standard features include 19-inch wheels, bi-xenon HID headlights, a heated glass rear window, heated exterior mirrors, six-way power carbon fiber sport seats, leather and Alcantara upholstery, aluminum trim, Bluetooth phone connectivity, dual-zone automatic climate control, adaptive cruise control and a seven-speaker Bose surround-sound system with a trunk-mounted six-CD changer.
