Beschreibung

We are always on the hunt for these. A well-specified S123 280TE remains one of the most sought-after but elusive Mercedes of its era. It’s not that they were rare, but their Swiss Army Knife, do-anything usability meant that they were all used up rather than preserved, and the youngest is 40 years old today.

The 123 estate was Mercedes first factory-built estate car. Previously only coachbuilt conversions of the W114/115 were available. It instantly addressed the need and desire for a classy, powerful, luxurious and thoroughly practical car for the whole family, including the dog. A do-everything car that proved that estate cars need not be wholly utilitarian in the Volvo mould. In the late 70s and early 80s, a 280TE or Range Rover were the must-haves of the home counties set.

Whilst four-cylinder and even diesel estates were available, the most desired has always been the 280, with its 185bhp six. Of course, like an MB of this era, there were a myriad of options to spec the car up as much as your wallet allowed.

This ’84 280TE has a pretty nice specification. The beautiful Labrador Blue paintwork is complemented by a navy blue velour interior, which was an option similarly priced to leather. It also has factory air conditioning, electric windows front and rear, a factory tow bar, manual sunroof, cruise control and an automatic gearbox. We’re rather glad the first owner didn’t go for the optional alloy wheels as the body-coloured stainless trims that take their place look so good. But there is also a lovely, period roof-rack fitted and a new Blaupunkt radio with Bluetooth.

This car was something of a barn find back in 2016 when the last owner acquired it, evidently unused for many years, but in very solid original condition underneath, we suspect because it was a London car.

Over the following eight years the car was gradually restored – mechanically recommissioned with the suspension, brakes and fuel systems overhauled. The air conditioning system has been refurbished too. The wheels were restored and shod with new Michelin tyres.

The body was treated to a full repaint and lots of new parts were sourced including all the rear light clusters and lamps in the bumper. The body is in lovely condition as a result.

The interior is entirely original – there are no holes or wear in the velour upholstery and the original carpeting remains in good condition.

Comes with books and a folder of recent bills. HPI clear. 12 months MoT with no advisories.

Being built in 1984 this car is eligible for immediate transfer to Historic tax class making it ULEZ, MoT and tax exempt. We can do this at point of sale for the new owner.

In summary a rare-to-find, high-spec 280TE in lovely period colours that has benefitted from a great deal of work over the last few years. Very stylish and probably the ultimate practical classic.
