The History of Benelli Company

The company has a rich and long development history. Benelli was founded by six brothers in 1911. Teresa Benelli invested huge money in the business of her six sons and helped them establish the workshop where they began to manufacture legendary motorcycles. Initially, the brothers worked in a small garage where they created the first motorcycle in 1919. It had a bicycle frame with a two stroke 75cc engine. However, the invention wasn’t very successful, so the first real Benelli motorcycle was invented in 1921. That moment played a key role in the company’s history. The new model of Benelli motorcycle was designed in 1926. It was a 175cc 4-stroke engine bike that demonstrated excellent performance. As a result, the company’s sales and revenue began to increase.

Two new motorcycles (a 250 twin cam and a 500) were designed in 1934. During the Second World War the company only produced military motorcycles. However, the factory was completely destroyed by bombing attacks. The brothers restored the factory and continued producing Benelli motorcycles in 1947. Later, one of the brothers decided to leave the company and start his own business. In 1948 the company hired a well-known racer, Dario Ambrosini, who won the World Championship in 1950. The company’s motorcycles won more than 1000 various racing competitions from 1950 to 1970.

The motorcycle industry experienced a crisis in 1961. That’s why the two popular brands Benelli and Motobi had to merge. Alejandro De Tomaso purchased the factory in 1972. The new owner redesigned the factory, so it began to produce more up-to-date multi-cylinder motorcycles. In 1995, the company started manufacturing scooters and sport bikes.

Popular Classic Models of Benelli Motorcycles

The 1965 Benelli 250cc vintage racer was specially developed for a popular racing group in California. It has original piston ring set, custom copper head, squish band, valve pockets, base gaskets and adjustable racing shocks.

The 1967/8 Benelli racing replica demonstrated excellent results in classic racing competitions. The model was also successful in parades. It became the hit of the millennium.

The 1975 Benelli 250 2c has great design. The motorcycle comes with metal clock housings and drum brakes.

The Benelli 354 Sport was manufactured in 1981. This bike has established a good reputation among racers due to its amazing braking system that is equipped with triple cast iron discs. The bike also has great handling. Nevertheless, it is a very rare model.
