Chevrolet 3600 Classic Cars for Sale

The first post-World War II truck that was constructed by US company Chevrolet was the Chevrolet 3600 (Advance-Design). It was marketed as a vehicle that was not only bigger but also stronger and sleeker in design lines than the previous AK series. The Chevrolet 3600 was a three-quarter of a ton truck. It hit the American showrooms in the summer of 1947 and was sold with various updates until it was discontinued in the spring of 1955. From that year the outdated Advance-Design series was replaced by the Task-Force Series.

The history and specifications of the Chevrolet 3600

The emerging post-war US market was the perfect place to launch this two-door pickup truck on the GMA platform. The Chevrolet 3600 could be bought with a 3.5-litre, 3.9-litre or a 4.3-litre engine. It was only sold with a manual transmission until 1954. From that year the company released a version with a Hydramatic automatic gearbox. GM used the same principles of design for all of the trucks that it produced. The Chevrolet 3600 had the same basic cab configurations throughout its production cycle along with similar grilles. Between the years 1947-1955 Chevrolet trucks, featuring the Chevrolet 3600 were the best selling in their class throughout the US.

Design changes for the Chevrolet 3600 during production years

The Chevrolet 3600 was the first truck available in the US for sale with dash mounted radios. This was an optional extra. Changes took place over the production years, and the Chevrolet 3600 did not undergo any revolutionary alterations but evolved slowly. From 1948 the manual transmission was mounted on the column rather than the floor and from the following year the petrol tank was moved and mounted upright behind the seating in the cabin. The make for a smoother ride, in 1950, telescopic shock absorbers were introduced. The design of the door handles was changed in 1952, and the downturn style was replaced with push buttons.

For the final year of production in 1955, the Chevrolet 3600 was almost identical to the 1954 Chevrolet 3600 except for the 'hood-side' emblems that had a new look. There was also a new open driveshaft that replaced the enclosed torque tube.
