Description
Transmission: 4 gears, Manual gearbox
Series production of the Volkswagen Type 2 T1 began in March 1950 at the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg with the panel van. Characteristic of the T1 is the front with V-shaped beads, the large VW emblem and the split windscreen. The driver and front passenger doors had sash windows with toggle latches and a narrow hinged window each.
The technology of the T1 has largely been adopted from the VW Beetle: rear-wheel drive with an air-cooled 4-cylinder boxer engine, which initially had 25 hp. The rear swing axle and front double crankshaft were torsion bar suspension, a torsion bar (round rod) on the left and right at the rear and two "spring packs" one above the other at the front. The car had front and rear drum brakes. Unlike the Beetle, the self-supporting body was reinforced with transverse and longitudinal profiles to support the initial payload of 760 kg and later up to a ton. The steering wheel was flat and taller than the Beetle's.
Sales of the van were so successful that production was moved from the main factory in Wolfsburg to the new VW factory in Hanover on March 8, 1956.
