"This big Karmann" has been in the family for over 30 years and has spent the last few years in a deep sleep. Due to space constraints, it is now getting a new home.
Older restoration in very good condition. The sheet metal is excellent!!! The report from 2017 attests a grade of 2 and a value of €37,000. I drove the car after it had been standing still for about 1.5 years. "A little fiddling and off you go" it's amazing how the solid technology works.
Wikipedia writes about this (excerpt):
VW Karmann-Ghia Type 34, "the big Karmann-Ghia"
Production period: 1961–1969
Class: mid-range, body versions: coupe
Gasoline engines: 1.5–1.6 liters (34–40 kW), length: 4280 mm, width: 1620 mm, height: 1335 mm, wheelbase: 2400 mm, curb weight: 910–940 kg
The **VW Type 34 **is the "big Karmann-Ghia", the sports coupe based on the VW Type 3 of those years. It was built on a contract basis for VW at Karmann in Osnabrück.
Positioning in the model range
It is not the successor to the "small Karmann Ghia" (VW Type 14), but both were produced and offered in parallel. While the Type 14 is based on a (slightly modified) VW Beetle chassis, the Type 34 is based on the VW Type 3 (VW 1500/1600) and shares the platform frame including axles and drive with it. Until the appearance of the VW 411, i.e. from the end of 1961 to 1968, the large Karmann was the most expensive and fastest passenger car in VW's range.
For the 1966 model year, the S engine was replaced by a 1600 cc engine with 54 hp (40 kW) that could run on regular gasoline. The 1600 with 54 hp (40 kW) was retained - with minor modifications - until the end of production of the vehicle type.
The Type 34 was not a commercial success. After only 42,505 vehicles, this type was discontinued without a successor.
As a result of the low production numbers from the start, the large Karmann is now rarely seen on the road. Its technology is relatively simple, easy to maintain and repair, and spare parts for the drive and chassis are readily available. However, many Karmann-specific parts of the body are considered to be highly problematic. Unlike the VW Beetle and the VW Type 3, the fenders on the Karmann bodies are welded instead of screwed on. Front masks, bumpers, windshields and taillights are said to pose great problems when it comes to replacing them; dismantled vehicles often have to donate the necessary parts. As a result, flawless "34 Karmanns" now command five-figure prices.
