Brand & Model History:

The Golf 2 continued the tradition of the Golf 1 as one of the most important models in the compact class and dominated the European market in this segment. The Golf 2 played a significant role in establishing the Golf as Volkswagen's "volume model" worldwide. With the Golf 2, Volkswagen cemented its reputation as a manufacturer of reliable and durable vehicles. Overall, the VW Golf 2 can be considered one of the most important vehicles of the 1980s and early 1990s, defining the compact class and shaping expectations of quality and versatility in this category. Its wide range of variants, from economical diesel models to sporty GTIs, made it attractive to different target groups.

History & Condition:

Offered here is a Golf 2 from the last production year 1991, first registered on 03.01.1991 by a gentleman from Ludwigshafen, who remained the only owner of the Golf. The vehicle was ordered with the smooth-running 1.3 NZ engine with a catalytic converter and the rare 5-speed manual transmission, a multifunction display, tachometer, and additional speakers. The decision was also made at the time not to have a sunroof, as it provided more headroom, and the first owner was very tall.

This gentleman later retrofitted a GT-style interior with original sports seats, fender flares, a front spoiler lip, sportier suspension tuning, and darker tinted windows. The Golf sits on original 15-inch BBS rims with VW part numbers and new 195 tires.

In 2023, the vehicle came into the hands of a Munich VW enthusiast, who visually and technically overhauled it with many new parts, including new tires, brakes, ignition system, all suspension bushings, control arms, all four shock absorbers, timing belt incl. water pump, major engine inspection, brake fluid change, etc.

It then passed the HU/AU/H-license plate inspection without defects until 2026!

The Golf appears to be rust-free and has certainly never been welded anywhere. Last year, it was primarily used for classic car events and meetings after the overhaul.

A complete paint preparation with sealing was also carried out. The result is quite impressive, except for a few minor scratches that were deliberately left to preserve the original paint. A little patina is certainly allowed.

In addition to the complete, original onboard folder with all manuals and the sought-after service booklet, there is also a folder with invoices that verify the low mileage of approximately 32,900 km.

The Golf is still in its original condition, mostly in original paint, and has not been modified with aftermarket parts. The interior is as if from a nearly new car: nothing is worn, frayed, or stained, and it has never been smoked in or transported animals.

The engine runs smoothly and delivers its performance like the first day. The 5-speed transmission shifts very cleanly and not stiffly, making it more economical and more efficient on longer journeys than the usual 4-speed.

This is probably one of the best-preserved, very original, complete Golf 2s with a unique history in a very beautiful condition!!

Market Position and Prices:

Its main competitors during the 1980s and early 1990s included:

  • Opel Kadett
  • Ford Escort
  • Peugeot 205
  • Renault 19
  • Fiat Tipo

The Golf 2 positioned itself as a reliable, high-quality vehicle suitable for both everyday use and longer journeys. It was not the cheapest vehicle in its segment, but its reputation for durability, high build quality, and the associated high resale value made it a popular choice.

The Golf 2 was available in various versions to appeal to different target groups, including:

Base versions with smaller engines and simpler equipment for budget-conscious buyers.

Golf GTI and Golf GT for sportier drivers looking for more power and a more dynamic driving experience.

Golf Country (an early crossover model with increased ground clearance and all-wheel drive) that targeted a niche audience looking for a rugged, off-road capable vehicle.

Diesel models, known for their economy and popular with frequent drivers.

From around the 2010s, the Golf 2 began to develop into a youngtimer, and prices stabilized or even rose for particularly well-preserved examples. Particularly sought-after models like the Golf 2 GTI or the rare Golf Country became increasingly popular among enthusiasts and collectors. In the 2020s, the Golf 2 has established itself as a classic youngtimer, and prices for well-maintained or restored models have continued to rise. Especially well-preserved vehicles or rare special models have experienced a significant increase in value.

Summary:

This VW Golf 2 is a 1991 vehicle that has been in first ownership and has only 32,900 km on the clock. It was ordered with a 1.3 NZ engine and a rare 5-speed manual transmission, and later upgraded with a GT package (sports suspension, sports seats, fender flares). The vehicle was technically and visually overhauled by an enthusiast in 2023, received numerous new parts, and passed the HU/AU inspection until 2026. It is rust-free, mostly original, and has been used primarily for classic car events since then. The Golf is in exceptionally well-preserved condition with a well-maintained interior and original paintwork. The Golf 2 has generally established itself as a popular youngtimer, and well-preserved models like this one have experienced a significant increase in value.
