Description

The Porsche 911 996.2 GT3, introduced in 2003, holds a special place in the hearts of automotive enthusiasts and collectors. Known for its raw driving dynamics and track-focused engineering, this car exemplifies Porsche’s motorsport heritage. It remains a favourite among purists for its analogue nature and exceptional performance capabilities.

The 996.2 GT3 was the first car fully developed by Andreas Preuninger, the current godfather of all things GT-related at Weissach. Representing a comprehensive update over its predecessor, the Gen2 model featured several key design and mechanical enhancements. The “fried egg” headlights of the earlier model were replaced with the more elegant “teardrop” lamps, while the rear spoiler adopted a simpler, more refined design. The front wings were made more prominent to accommodate lighter wheels and wider tires, further improving grip and handling.

At the heart of the 996.2 GT3 lies a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine, known as the Mezger engine. While the engine’s displacement remained unchanged from the previous model, Porsche introduced significant advancements, including drive-by-wire technology and the Variocam variable valve timing system. These updates boosted power to 375 horsepower and widened the torque curve, enhancing both performance and drivability. A raised rev limit of 8,200 rpm added to the engine’s thrilling character, while lightened valves, pistons, and con rods, along with the removal of a crankshaft damper, shaved 3.5 kilograms off the engine’s weight. The result was a car that felt even more responsive and alive.

Coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission, the engine delivers a visceral driving experience with linear power delivery and an exhilarating crescendo as the redline approaches. The Mezger engine, derived from Porsche’s Le Mans-winning motorsport program, is celebrated for its durability and lack of the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing issues that affected some other 996 models.

The 996.2 GT3’s chassis and suspension were engineered for precision and performance, paired with a lower ride height than the Carrera, provided exceptional cornering capabilities. The car’s fixed rear wing and optimised front splitter increased downforce, ensuring stability at high speeds, while its lightweight construction contributed to a balanced and agile driving experience.

Inside, the cockpit reflects the GT3’s motorsport origins. While minimalistic, the interior offers just enough comfort for those willing to embrace the car’s uncompromising nature.

Driving the 996.2 GT3 is a deeply engaging experience. The hydraulic steering provides exceptional feedback, making the driver feel directly connected to the road. Limited sound insulation further amplifies the car’s raw, mechanical nature, which is thrilling during spirited drives.

The 996.2 GT3 is increasingly sought after in the collector’s market. Its analogue nature and focus on driver engagement make it highly desirable in an era dominated by turbocharging and advanced electronic aids.

Pendine Historic Cars Ltd is pleased to offer this superb Porsche 911 996.2 GT3, registered in January 2005. Finished in striking Basalt Black with a complementary Black Leather interior.

With 41,000 miles and a full-service history, the car has been well-maintained, ensuring it is ready for its next owner. The interior features Recaro bucket seats, providing excellent support, while the desirable centre console delete adds a clean, driver-focused aesthetic. Externally, the Porsche crests on the wheels add a subtle yet distinctive touch to the car’s appearance.

This GT3 is equipped with steel brakes, offering dependable and consistent stopping power. The car also benefits from partial PPF covering the stone chip-prone areas.

In summary, the Porsche 911 996.2 GT3 represents a perfect blend of road and track performance. As the first car fully overseen by Andreas Preuninger, it established a template that continues to define Porsche’s GT lineup. Whether for spirited drives, track days or as a collectable investment, the 996.2 GT3 stands as a testament to Porsche’s GT3 legacy.
