The “oil flap”! (A story in itself)

The Porsche 911 with the so-called “oil flap” is a special model that was produced between 1971 and 1972 and belongs to the 911 F series. What makes this version so special is an additional flap on the right rear fender, which allows the oil for the engine to be refilled separately.

Special features of the oil flap:

Easy filling:

The oil flap was installed to make it easier to access the oil tank, as the early 911 models have dry sump lubrication. This flap made it easy to top up oil without having to open the hood.

Confusion:

However, the placement of the flap caused problems. Some drivers confused the oil flap with the petrol filler neck and accidentally filled the oil tank with petrol. This led to serious engine damage, which was a key reason why Porsche only kept the oil flap for two years.

Rarity and collector value:

As these models were only produced for a short period of time, 911s with the oil flap are extremely rare and sought after by collectors today. The historical and technical background makes these vehicles valuable collector's items. The oil flap is therefore a distinctive feature that reflects a piece of automotive history, especially in the context of the challenges and innovations of the early Porsche 911 development.
