Description
"Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas" feeling... because just moments ago, this 1963 Sport Fury "Commando" convertible was rolling down the streets of Las Vegas. The play of colors between the copper exterior paint and the summer sun is so fabulously beautiful, you can hardly take your eyes off it. On top of that, there's the elegant black interior and a top that retracts hydraulically at the touch of a button...you can't get much more of a sense of freedom than that.
The Sport Fury came from the factory with a big block engine, albeit a 361cui.
In its later life, this was replaced with a more "modern" 383cui (6.3L) V8 engine from the muscle car area. This one has an original cast steel intake manifold for 4 barrel carburetor. The carburetor itself,
has already been replaced with a newer one from Edelbrock.
To shift the gears of the big A727 automatic transmission, the tiptypes in the indicator panel were provided ex factory. This type of shifter was replaced here by an "old school" performance shifter on the gimbal tunnel. Together with the twin pipe exhaust system, this has made the Sport Fury even sportier than it already was from the factory. Power steering provides a relaxed and easy steering experience.
The car is a feast for the eyes
As with all of our vehicles, this one was checked in our shop and we had to repair a lot of things. For example, the engine mount was redone and a suitable alternator was installed. The speedometer function was also repaired and we were able to find the right kickdown control for the transmission in our parts store. The water cooler was flushed, the cooling system was re-filled and porous hoses were replaced. The heater that no one needed in Nevada was also put back into service and is now working as well.
All 4 frame beams and the sills are in very good condition. They have not been bent in an accident, nor do they have rust damage or have been repaired unprofessionally. In addition, all rubber fuel hoses were renewed and a new battery mount was installed. New heater hoses and new hose fittings in the water pump housing were installed. A new bell crank was installed in the front axle to eliminate play in the steering. A new speedometer cable was installed.
The folding vinyl top, with an incorporated plastic rear window was just recently replaced. Also new is the tarpaulin to cover the top when open. You don't even have to get out of the car to open the top. A knob on the dashboard conveniently activates the hydraulic roof function. The top opens and closes automatically. All window surrounds and side trim are present and still made of stainless steel. In fact, starting with the 1970 production year, the more durable and resistant stainless steel was replaced by stamped aluminum. Contrary to some vehicle pictures, we have reinstalled the original hood emblem. The bumpers are in top condition. We assume that they have already been re-chromed by a previous owner. In addition, a new tank and new brake lines have already been installed. The car is driven and braked on 225/70R14 tires with original Sport Fury Spinner hubcaps and 10" drum brakes.
As mentioned, the exterior appearance is just beautiful and for its 59 years, this mid-sized US classic car (called a B-Body) stands up well.
The paint is shiny and the finish is not old. Thus, it does not tend to wear out if you do not polish it regularly. However, we can't describe the paint job as perfect.
Plymouth had some of the best individual seats of the time. Unlike the seats of the competition, the Plymouth seats were already slightly contoured. Not only did they look good, but they felt much more comfortable. Since these are still the original seat covers, some spots from the copper-colored inserts have faded from the sun, but they have charm, are intact, and are comfortable. The door panels have already been replaced and match the look of the original interior. The chrome dashboard is in exceptionally good condition. The vinyl cover over it has dried out over the years due to the sunny climate, but this is available new. For the 1963 model year, the Sport Fury was equipped with more gauges. So, in a southern flair with Western script, the speedometer, temperature, alternator, clock and fuel gauges are integrated. The car also has 2 mechanical (i.e. current/voltage independent) auxiliary gauges from Steward Warner installed in the Old Style Lock that reliably display. The original steering wheel is a rare version with 360° horn ring.
For our German customers, we can of course provide a TÜV full acceptance and also a historical report on request. So you would only need to register it and could start cruising directly.
