The history of the Opel GT dates back to 1965, when Opel presented its styling concept at the Autosalon of Paris and Frankfurt. With visitors wildly enthusiastic Opel continued with the project until in1968 the GT hit the market. The GT has borrowed Kadett B engineering and has the appearance showing strong similarities with the 1967 Corvette C3. As such the sportive sculpted and reliable coupé has everything in house to become a success.

Whereas the style is rather American, the dimensions and mechanics are quite European measuring 4.11 metres in length initially with a 1.1 litre 60 hp engine. You probably were not going to head to your nearest drag strip to compete with its adult version. Fortunately Opel also had a more powerful 1.9 litre, 90 Hp option that propelled the 940 kg sportscar with a lot more ease. Logically the 1,897 cc 4-cylinder became the popular choice for the flashy Blitz.

This 1972 ocre yellow GT has been fully restored. Photographs of the restoration confirm the “bare-bones” approach taken in order to perfectly rebuild this GT to the state you see before you. The condition of the steel bodywork and paintwork are therefore excellent, with beautifully aligned panelwork. The seams of the boot lid are even totally absent; Opel decided you would not need easy access to the boot space. Any luggage or baggage would have to go through the normal doors. Once inside you realise how neat everything is. Neat seats, pristine carpets and a very tidy dashboard. The original steering wheel does show some signs of wear. The are no major deficits or damage to be found, the compact and bijou interior is quite inviting.

You will definitely enjoy driving this GT with its fully overhaul mechanics. The 1900 four-cylinder is nice and responsive providing great handling and roadholding of this light coupé. The floor is as you would hope it to be, it is as good as the top is.

The Opel GT is not an everyday appearance, although being a great choice for your daily drive.
In short, if you want a car that stands out but do not wish to be confronted by any unpleasant surprises, then the GT is the one to go for!
