Description
With the Type 180 and its so-called pontoon body, Mercedes became modern from July 1953. The passenger car chassis and real wings had become obsolete. The new, self-supporting design offered significantly more interior space and for the first time allowed safety aspects of a specifically mouldable sheet metal structure. After the four-cylinder models, the public eagerly awaited the six-cylinder models. A skilfully stretched body gave the Mercedes 220 S elegance and the necessary distance to the smaller models. The elegant Cabriolet and Coupé were not added to the range until 1956. From 1958, the special models were also fitted with the fuel-injection engine, a hallmark of modern engine construction at the time. At DM 23,400, the price of the 220 SE Coupé was DM 9,000 higher than that of the limousine. Only 830 examples of this model were delivered, exclusively handcrafted to the highest quality.
The history of our Mercedes-Benz 220 SE is interesting: the buyer had the coupé delivered to Japan and moved with it to the USA. There, in Los Angeles, the current owner bought the classic car from the first owner’s heir. Our classic is therefore of high quality and quite original.
