THE LOTUS ELAN S3

Introduced in 1962, the Elan featured a simple but effective steel backbone frame and all-independent wishbone suspension which used a modified Chapman Strut, as developed in Lotus Grand Prix cars, at the rear. Rack and pinion steering was sourced from the Triumph Vitesse and there were Girling disc brakes all round. The Elan's engine was a highly modified 1498cc (later 1558cc) Ford Cortina unit incorporating Lotus's own twin camshaft cylinder head and both the gearbox and differential came, likewise, from Ford. Introduced in November 1964, the S3 featured numerous detail styling changes and improved brakes. As one would expect given its background and specification, the Elan proved to be a highly capable circuit racer and with a kerb weight of just 689 kilograms and a powerful Lotus-modified 1558cc four-cylinder Ford engine, the Elan's startling performance humbled supercars costing twice its price.

THIS ELAN

This restored 1967 Lotus Elan S3 is a rare gem, finished in the iconic and classic shade of British Racing Green of striking silver wheels. Though the restoration was completed some years ago, the car still presents in lovely condition, both mechanically and cosmetically. It has been part of part of a private collection and is presented after over 20 years of ownership.

In left-hand drive and having spent much of the recent two decades in Belgium, this Elan is presented in good condition both cosmetically as mechanically having been restored a while ago.The Lotus Elan S3 embodies the classic lightweight sports car experience that Colin Chapman envisioned, delivering nimble handling, precise steering, and pure driving pleasure. This example is perfect for collectors or drivers who appreciate authentic, timeless British engineering. The S3 starts instantly and is very responsive on the throttle. Steering, 4-speed (+ overdrive) gearbox, clutch etc. all performing well.
