The X351 might have continued the modern Jaguar tradition of building its saloons out of aluminium but all most people want to know is what’s lurking under the bonnet.

The answer in this case is a five-litre V8 running 503bhp and 461lb.ft of torque, figures mighty enough for the XJ to haul itself to 62mph in under five seconds – and to do it while feeling “balletic” according to one motoring journalist at its launch.

A six-speed ZF gearbox feeds power to the active limited-slip rear differential and considerable computing power ensures that you’re always in the right gear – and if you do overcook it then the Big Jag has your back using a combination of electronically actuated brakes on the output shafts and perfectly honed suspension.

It’s got a real flair for the dramatic too; press the ‘dynamic’ button and not only do the dials glow red but the seatbelt pre-tensioners flex their muscle, leaving you in no doubt you’re in for a helluva drive.

It’s had just the one owner too, which is remarkable given its age.
