Description

Highlights:

  • Original paint
  • Van logo
  • Technically overhauled

Brand & Model History:

The International Metro Van, manufactured by International Harvester, is a step van, also known as a walk-in or multi-stop delivery vehicle. This type of vehicle was among the early mass-produced forward-control vehicles and was commonly used for milk or bakery deliveries, as well as for emergency services, mobile offices, and radio broadcast vehicles. Typically, they were 1/2-, 3/4-, or 1-ton vans where the driver could stand or sit while operating the vehicle.

Variations included a passenger bus called the Metro Coach, a Metro partial chassis with a front section (for custom modifications), and a truck with a walk-in cab, also known as a "Walk-in Cab." The truck variant (also referred to as a chassis cab) could be configured with a separate box or container for freight transport or left open to be fitted with other equipment like a garbage compactor or a flatbed.

Condition & History:

This van is a rare and original 1949 International Harvester Metro KB-3 M, a second-generation delivery van built between 1941 and 1949. This model is distinguished by its tall, chrome grille, flat fenders, blade bumpers, and iconic triple-diamond logo, all contributing to its authentic retro look.

The van was discovered in 2014 in Montana, USA, where it was originally planned to be converted into an ice cream truck. After purchase, the previous owner brought the vehicle to the UK, but it arrived in a non-running condition, lacking brakes and electricity. By December 2020, the Metro was transported to Belgium in time to avoid Brexit customs fees, and it has since undergone extensive restoration.

The body is in remarkably good condition overall, especially considering its 73 years of age. Only minor rust damage on the front and the driver's side sill was professionally repaired. The van has retained its authentic patina—the original paint was carefully revealed with thinner and wet sanding, preserving the charm of the old finish. Logos and lettering are largely intact, highlighting the vehicle’s unique character.

The engine has been overhauled, with new components including the fuel pump, spark plugs, and HT leads. The radiator was professionally repaired, and the carburetor has been thoroughly cleaned multiple times. The braking system has also been completely renewed: New master brake cylinders, overhauled wheel cylinders, as well as new copper lines and flexible hoses ensure safe driving. The tires are in excellent condition, with two spare tires included in the sale.

The Metro still has most of its original wiring. Gauges such as fuel, amperes, and temperature are working, although the fuel gauge is not always 100% accurate. Taillights and indicators have been added in a period-appropriate style, with lenses made from real glass.

The interior has been restored in an authentic style. Originally, the vehicle only had a driver's seat, but I added a second seat from a '57 Metro, both newly upholstered with high-quality leather from an old sofa that perfectly matches the van’s vintage look. The dashboard is fully functional, including a working retro fan and a heater located behind the driver’s seat.

This 1949 International Harvester Metro KB-3 M is a rare find and a real eye-catcher. Lovingly restored over the years, it retains as much originality as possible. The van draws attention at every event and is one of the few remaining Metros in this condition. Perfect for enthusiasts who want to enjoy a piece of automotive history—ready to drive and full of character.
