Description
1979 Ferrari 512 BB
- One of 929 carbureted 512 BB examples produced
- Retains its matching-numbers engine and transmission
- Restored to its original body colour
The 365 GT4 BB was the first mid-engined, 12-cylinder road car from the Maranello marque to wear a Ferrari badge. A rival to Lamborghini’s Countach, it lasted for three years before the 512 BB replacement arrived in 1976 with an enlarged 360 brake horsepower, carburettor-fed, 4,943-cc flat-12—related to the engine in Niki Lauda’s contemporary Formula 1 racer—that propelled the model to a 188 mph top speed. With its engine the 512 Berlinetta Boxer was the marque’s first major evolution of Ferrari’s first mid-engine supercar, it was described by then Ferrari F1 driver Carlos Reutemann, who tested it for Quattroruote Magazine, as a ‘car for the few’ due to its vigorous acceleration and exclusive price tag.
According to the original Fahrzeugbrief, this 512 BB was distributed by Auto Becker, the Ferrari importer in Dusseldorf, and first registered on May 29, 1979. This car is one of only 929 carburettors produced and of these one of only 20 produced in total Argento Met. 106-E-1 with black leather interior V.M. 3282 still present on the car today and black carpet no. 90. The corresponding engine number is also confirmed by Scuderia Gran Turismo GmbH of Irschenberg.
The first owner Mr. Geier of Russelsheim kept the car for exactly two years until in late May 1981 it came into the possession of Mr. Braun, a well-known enthusiast of the brand living near Frankfurt, from this moment according to the invoices and photos of the time the car was repainted in Rosso Corsa and sent to the Munich preparers Koenig-Ferrari Specials the car was transformed with an aesthetic kit and several improvements to stability and performance were installed to make it the fastest Berlinetta Boxer in Assia. The life of this car extends with many workmanship and modifications during the period of ownership of Mr. Braun until 1993 when the BB still in the Koenig version passes to its third/fourth owner Mr. Bernecker near Dussendorf. In 1993/1994, Mr. Bernecker, appreciating the speed qualities of the BB but preferring the traditional style, began a costly and lengthy restoration at Modena Motorsport in Langenfeld, where the car was restored to its original condition, spending over 40,000 DM (invoice available), while the mechanical part including engine, gearbox and chassis was entrusted to Die Sportwagen Spezialisten of Hochst Ferrari specialists , spending over 35,000 DM (invoice available).
Since 2011 the BB has changed hands to its last German owner who has looked after it until the purchase by our agent at the end of 2024. During his ownership the car has been maintained by Formula GT with a further engine overhaul and accessory services at a cost of over €20,000 (invoices available) and with a bench test which certifies the power of this 512BB of over 370hp. In the early months of this year the car was subjected to checks at our specialists where a total overhaul of the braking system and a total overhaul of the Koni shock absorber system were carried out, the Cromodora magnesium rims were overhauled and fitted with new Michelin XWX tyres, the original upholstery was treated and restored and a new supply of black wool carpeting was installed.
At the moment the car is presented in original condition and in perfect efficiency, and represents a rare opportunity to purchase one of the first BB carburettors with tachymeter with 330 full scale in ready-to-use condition in a very elegant color combination with Italian registration and ASI certification, on the other hand Ferraris are beautiful in any color except red then if the Ferrari is a BB it is better.
