The Donkervoort S8 is an ultralight sports car manufactured by Donkervoort in Lelystad, the Netherlands, between 1983 and 1993. It is the second model produced by Donkervoort, as a successor to the Donkervoort S7. Three models were produced: the Donkervoort S8, the Donkervoort S8A and the Donkervoort S8AT. It was replaced in 1988 by the Donkervoort D10, which in turn was replaced in 1993 by the Donkervoort D8
Donkervoort S8AT (1986-1994) The first S8ATs used the chassis of the S8A. Due to environmental regulations in 1986, Ford had to equip its engines with a catalytic converter. This reduced the power of the engines, so Donkervoort decided to develop its own engine. The basis of this engine is the old two-valve 2-liter Ford engine, to which Donkervoort added a Garret T3 turbo charger, an intercooler, Cosworth pistons, a new petrol injection system and a three-way catalytic converter. The block delivered 170 hp as a 2-liter and 190 hp in the 2.2-liter version. The chassis, which came from the D10, was also new. This chassis was wider and stronger, which increased the torsional stiffness. The new front and rear suspension also came from the D10, and from 1991 disc brakes were installed in the rear.
I doubt whether the story about the D10 chassis is true. As far as I know, only 2 S8ATs with a D10 chassis were built. There were 2-liter versions with a flowed head that delivered 180 hp. The 2.2-liter with 190 hp was only delivered in the D10, as far as I know. But no Donkervoort is the same, they are all built to the customer's wishes so you never know....
Another story regarding the engine is that Donkervoort wanted to have the 2 liter Cosworth with overhead camshafts, 24 valves and a turbo in the Donkervoort as a successor to the 2 liter Pinto. But Ford announced that this engine would not be delivered for road use, only for sport. Later, the Cosworth block was still built into road cars (first the Ford Sierra and later the Ford Escort) and there are also a few Donkervoort S8ATs equipped with this block. These seem to be the most wild/uncultivated Donkervoorts ever.
This Donkervoort presented here is still a very beautiful one and looks like new. You can see that the car has been perfectly maintained and there is no play in the steering and it drives, shifts and brakes great. It is a total sensation to drive a Donkervoort. You sit close to the road which makes the speed sensation even greater. Come visit us to see this car in real life.
