Description

Successor to the race proven E9 3.0CS/CSi, the BMW 6-Series was introduced in August 1976. More forgiving than its predecessors, it utilised a modified version of the 5-Series saloon platform equipped with all-round independent suspension and powerful disc brakes. A natural rival to the 928 and XJS, the four-seater 6-Series proved more capacious than the Porsche and sportier than the Jaguar. Immediately recognisable thanks to its distinctive 'shark nose' frontal styling and thin pillared glasshouse it boasts real road presence. An impression backed up by the various versions of BMW's mighty M30, SOHC straight-six engine fitted throughout the range. Second only to the BMW Motorsport tuned M635CSi version, the 635CSi's 3430cc unit developed some 216bhp and 232lbft of torque propelling it from 0-60mph in 8.4 seconds and on to 135mph.

This example is probably the ultimate of the 635CSi lineup, a last of line Motorsport Edition, of which only 181 were produced, presented in Macao Blue, fitted with a limited slip differential and with less than 50,000 miles on the odometer. Our vendor purchased the car in 2003 and has covered less than 10,000 miles during that time. The overall condition of the car is understandably quite exceptional, it has clearly always been cherished and stored properly, the paintwork gleams and the interior shows very little signs of ageing. In 2008, the car was taken to Berry BMW who completely resprayed the car, replaced many trim pieces and rubber seals and did an exceptional job on the car. The estimate on file for the work was over £5,700, a substantial amount of money back in 2008 and the finish is excellent. Our vendor chose to upgrade the wheels to a set of genuine Alpina hardline alloy wheels, which suit the E24 platform so well, but could easily be reversed if the next custodian wished to return the car to completely original. During recent years, the car has been professionally stored and has covered very little mileage, but was fully serviced in October 2023 at BMR Performance Ltd, who fitted new spark plugs, fresh oil and filters, carried out an Inspection II service, changed the diff oil and inspected the car. This 635 is ideal for any collector who wants an example which has led a charmed life and has clearly been in the hands of enthusiasts from day one. Supplied to auction with history file containing service booklet and various invoices, V5 registration document showing two former keepers and MoT test certificate valid until September 2025.
