Brand & Model History:
The BMW 502, affectionately known as the "Baroque Angel," is a true gem in automotive history, symbolizing the elegance and pioneering spirit of the 1950s. With its distinctive shape and luxurious features, the 502 set new standards for luxury vehicles and solidified BMW’s reputation as a producer of high-quality luxury cars.
Introduced in 1954, the BMW 502 was based on the BMW 501, which marked the Bavarian manufacturer’s post-war debut in 1952. Both models were nicknamed "Baroque Angel" due to their elegant design, characterized by generous curves and flowing lines. While the BMW 501 was praised for its impressive design and solid engineering, the 502 surpassed it in many aspects, making history as the first German car with a standard V8 engine.
The BMW 502 was the first German post-war car to feature a V8 engine. With a displacement of 2.6 liters and later 3.2 liters, the V8 delivered an impressive 100 to 120 hp, depending on the version. This performance enabled the Baroque Angel to reach a top speed of around 160 km/h, making it one of the fastest cars of its time.
BMW used innovative construction for the engine: the V8 was made of aluminum, which made it lighter and improved heat dissipation. This advanced technology emphasized BMW's goal of building a luxury car that was also technologically ahead of its time.
The design of the BMW 502 left no doubt as to why it earned the nickname "Baroque Angel." Its flowing lines, from the rounded, bold front to the sleek rear, gave it a graceful yet commanding presence. Chrome accents and the signature BMW kidney grille highlighted its luxurious appearance. The large windows and elevated body shape also provided excellent visibility, enhancing driving comfort.
Inside, the BMW 502 symbolized luxury and comfort. High-quality materials like leather and wood were generously used, creating a premium ambiance. The interior design was elaborate, with instruments and controls arranged like an aircraft cockpit.
In addition to the V8 engine, the BMW 502 featured numerous technical innovations. Optional disc brakes significantly improved braking performance and safety, which was rare at the time. The advanced suspension ensured a comfortable ride even on rough roads.
Thanks to its improved performance and technical features, the BMW 502 was appreciated not only in Germany but also internationally. It was a favorite among entrepreneurs, celebrities, and authorities – even German police forces used the robust and fast 502 for their operations.
Today, the BMW 502 is a rarity on the roads and a sought-after collector's item. Models in excellent condition are hard to find, and enthusiasts particularly value well-preserved cars with original equipment. Collectors cherish the BMW 502 for its elegant aesthetics, powerful engine, and innovative design. Vehicles in good condition fetch high prices in the collector’s market and are considered highlights in any classic car collection.
Condition & History:
This stunning BMW 502, the Baroque Angel, is in excellent, drivable condition, road-legal and approved. Owned by the seller since 2009 and consistently registered, the car has been meticulously maintained and securely stored in a garage. The TÜV (technical inspection) is new, and the vehicle is rust-free. Both the interior and exterior are in very good condition, and it has been graded with a condition score of 2.
The BMW 502 is one of the few examples available online with regular registration, a clear testament to its excellent usability.
According to BMW Classic, the car was originally equipped with a 120 hp engine (BMW 3.2). However, it now has an engine from the BMW 2.6 (100 hp), manufactured around autumn 1961. Such engine upgrades are not uncommon in these vehicles today.
