Benz Patent-Motorcar Classic Cars for Sale

The company which is now known as Mercedes-Benz was originally responsible for the first car to be invented. This was the Benz Patent-Motorwagen and it first appeared in 1885.

Karl Benz Invention

The Benz Patent-Motorwagen was the first motor vehicle or car which was invented to be driven by an internal combustion engine. It first appeared as the invention of Karl Benz in 1885, while it was still the 19th century. By today’s standards, it looked more like a tricycle than a car. The Benz Patent-Motorwagen was the first motor vehicle or car which was invented to be driven by an internal combustion engine. This path-breaking invention actually contained several inventions within itself. One was the engine. Another was the tyres. Karl Benz was originally an inventor who worked as an engineer with machines, none of which were mobile. But his automobile was an eternal hit. In order to finance his Benz Patent-Motorwagen, he took financial help from his wife and greatest supporter, Bertha Benz. She truly believed in the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. The subsequent success of the Benz Patent-Motorwagen proves her to have been a visionary woman. Later versions of the Benz Patent-Motorwagen appeared, each one improved in some way.

Bertha Benz’s Incredible Journey in her Benz Patent-Motorwagen

Although Karl Benz got the credit for being the inventor of the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, his wife, Frau Bertha Benz, appears to have been a driving (no pun intended) force behind the new invention. She didn’t just pay lip service to that belief. She actively demonstrated her faith in the Benz Patent-Motorwagen by being the first person to make a lengthy journey in it. In August 1888, Frau Bertha Benz set out on this journey in the Benz Patent-Motorwagen (car no. 3). She was accompanied by her two teenage sons. The story was that she undertook this journey without her husband’s knowledge. She drove from her residence in Mannheim to her mother’s house in her native town of Pforzheim in the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. She passed through the towns of Heidelberg and Weisloch during the journey. Her journey spanned approximately 100 kilometres each way.. Apart from driving, Bertha also had to solve the various mechanical problems which occurred along the way. She solved mechanical issues with such feminine tools as her hatpin and a garter. She stocked up on the requisite fuel, a chemical called ligroin, at a chemist shop. Bertha Benz’ journey proved beyond doubt that the Benz Patent-Motorwagen could be a useful invention. It ultimately became a commercial success. The Bertha Benz Memorial Route is a popular themed tourist attraction up to the present day.
