Description

The 1962 Big Healey

The Big Healey is one of the most legendary vehicles of its time. In 1961, the entire Western world was going through a major economic crisis, and the UK was no exception. Borrowing money became more difficult, so people now had to think twice before buying a car. But interest in the new and improved Healey remained strong in the USA, and the Americans loved the status symbol that was the new BT7, with its three SU carburettors and 132 hp.

This Healey BT7 was one of the last to roll off the production line in Abingdon-on-Thames, England, in April 1962. Soon shipped across the Atlantic, the Austin was handed over to its elated first owner in June 1962 by the regional Healey dealer in Charleston (South Carolina, USA). Unfortunately, there's no trace of its time in America. The story took a new turn in 1985 when the Healey was shipped back across the Atlantic, where its new owner carried out a meticulous frame-up restoration and returned it to its original condition. After that, the Austin-Healey spent 20 years delighting visitors in a Classics Museum in Germany. In 2013, a Healey enthusiast based near Zurich managed to purchase the BT7 and imported it to Switzerland. The vintage piece was polished up and inspected, receiving Veteran status on 29th August 2013 with 12,184 km on the clock.

Still at an incredibly low mileage, the classic changed hands again in March 2015. The current owner had the car professionally serviced every year and it passed its last MOT in 2021. The BT7 comes to us in excellent condition with a slight patina, which only adds more charm to its tale. The brake system was completely overhauled three years ago. The model has an electronic ignition distributor and features the original distributor, as you would expect. This Healey is also equipped with a chrome steel exhaust system. This truly rare Healey MKII BT7 3 carburettor, in its original Colorado Red, will be up for sale at our spring auction on 26th April 2025. A beautiful vehicle with a story to tell. It comes with extensive photographic documentation of the restoration, and the new owner will receive every receipt from 2013 onwards.
