Description

1933 Alvis Crested Eagle Vanden Plas 3 position drophead.
Chassis Number: 10670
Registration Number: ALE850
Brnad new & fully restored condition:
A unique & one off car bodied by Vanden Plas in three position drophead configuration commissioned by dealer Charles Follett, making it eminently useable & a comfortable 4 seater. Just 602 Crested Eagles were made with most being heavier bodied saloons. This is one of the rare few that were supplied as chassis only to be bodied later by the customers choice of coach builder. Ony six coachbuilt examples remain & the body on this one is unique.
This Crested Eagle is well known in club circles having been fully restored under the direction of the current owner who now needs to pass the car on with the onset of old age. It was displayed on the Alvis club stand at the 2024 NEC classic car show & has also won assorted prizes at other car shows. Photographs of the car in bare metal come in the extensive history file.
The car is finished in Fjord blue with the paint being in absolutely superb condition. The roof is of dark blue mohair & may be used either fully open, part open in the sedanca position or fully closed which with its West of England interior wool lining makes the cockpit a very snug place to be. The seats are covered in mid blue leather done to a very high standard along with blue carpets & a blue hood bag. The interior woodwork has also of course been removed & refinished. A capacious boot allows for a good quantity of luggage to be carried. The brightwork has been re-chomed & presents like new. A set of yet to be fitted custom made leather Wefco spring gaitors come with the car.
The engine is of 2.5 litre capacity & is fed by triple carburettors making for sporty perfomance. It has been fully rebuilt & runs with excellent oil pressure & water temperatures in the 70's. Modern day cruising speeds are easily attainable. Literally everything that could be done has been done during the restoration including a new honey-comb style radiator core fabricated at vast expense by Vintage Wings & Radiators of Manchester. When new the car had a Wilson Pre Select gear box but this was swiftly replaced with the familiar Alvis all syncromesh 4 speed box which is simply the best pre war gear box ever made in our opinion. A modern electric fan has also been installed but is only ever turned on briefly on hot summer days when in heavy traffic to augment the water pump driven circulation.
This is a very easy car to drive given the ample power from the engine allied to an all synchromesh gear box. The steering has been lightly modified to make it much lighter then the stock item. The first owner was over 6ft tall so the car is well suited to talled drivers. Simply put it is a car ready for immediate extended use & wants for nothing.
