Description

The Alfa Romeo GT 1600 Junior was introduced in 1972, to plug the gap between the GT 1300 Junior and the newly introduced GTV 2000. The engine was substantially the same as the Giulia Sprint GTV discontinued four years previously and had the same engine type number. The final drive ratio was again 9/41 as standard on all 105 series coupes with the 1290cc and 1570cc engines. From 1974 onwards, the GT 1300 Junior and GT 1600 Junior were rationalised onto a common platform of models with the GTV 2000 and rebadged as the 1.3 GT Junior and 1.6 GT Junior respectively, sharing most of the interior and exterior features of the larger engine car. Production ended in 1976/77 and totalled 13,120 units for the 1.6 GT Juniors. A flourishing market has emerged with companies producing spare parts and upgrades for the Alfa 105 range, most notably Alfaholics with their GTA replicas.

The car on offer is a recent import from South Africa, with all duties paid and now registered with a V5 registration document. The car comes with various import documents, along with a copy of its South African registration document. This example was first registered in South Africa in 1974 (based on the chassis number it was likely built in 1973). The history of the car dates back to 2010 where it is referenced on a post on the AlfaBB forum and at the time it already had a 2000cc engine fitted, which was a common update to the GT Juniors both in period and subsequently. During this period, the car appears to have had some improvements to make it a fast road car, including a lowering kit added to improve handling.

The car was purchased by the previous owner in 2021, who from 2022 undertook some work to refresh the car. A full new interior was installed with new leather seats (as opposed to the vinyl that the car would have had originally), new carpets and the steering wheel was recovered in leather. New period correct seatbelts were installed along with a new headlining and at the same time, the carpets in the boot were replaced to match the car. In September 2022, the car was entered in the annual Alfa concours event held at Modderfontein and was placed second in the 105 series Giulia class. Later in that month, the car took part in the Distinguished Gentleman's Drive charity event around Johannesburg and performed without fault. In 2023 preparations began to get the car for the 2024 Cape 1000 regulatory rally, which is a four-day event around the scenic western cape. Work included a new heater box from Classic Alfa, installation of Alfaholic pedals, a full service, including new oil pressure sender, windscreen washer bottle and fixing a gearbox leak, new battery and new spare tyre. The car then took part in The Cape 1000 from 14th March 2024 and the only issue encountered was a battery lead coming loose. The rally was completed with the car travelling 1630 kilometres in the four days (the car can be seen on various YouTube videos of the event) and it was then serviced in May 2024, with new plugs and a petrol sender installed.

The car was imported into the UK in 2024 and had a number of replacement items from Classic Alfa and Veloce Sport fitted, as well as the cooling system flushed and new coolant added, whilst waiting to be registered with the DVLA. In preparation for sale, the car has been looked at by a local restoration company and has had new brake and clutch master cylinders, brake union, suspension/steering rubbers and tuning .This car is now ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian and representing excellent value for money.
