History of the Glas Cabriolet

Hans Glas was one of the most innovative car manufacturers of the 50s and 60s. The Glas company in Dingolfing produced the legendary Goggomobil and motorised an entire generation with it in the 1950s. Hans Glas responded to the call for more sportiness, comfort and a dash of extravagance in a co-operation with the legendary car designer Pietro Frua. Frua designed and produced the bodies for the large V8 Glas Coupé and the delightful Glas GT Coupés and Cabriolets. The shapely and very elegant 4-cylinder models were offered by Glas in the 1300 and 1700 variants. Unfortunately, due to the high production costs, none of these vehicles were a great commercial success and ultimately led to the takeover of the Glas works in Dingolfing by BMW in 1966. Today, new BMW vehicles are still being produced in the now converted and modernised former glass works.

History & condition of the Glas 1700 GT Cabriolet offered here

Only 122 of the considerably more expensive 1700 GT Cabriolets were produced at Glas. The history of the GT 1700 Cabriolet offered here is fully documented. The old German cardboard letter is still present. This original 1700 was registered in Germany for the first time on 19 April 1966. It was deregistered and decommissioned at the end of the 70s. At some point, this vehicle came into the hands of a major glass enthusiast and BMW dealer in southern Germany. This was followed by almost 10 years of restoration in which this special vehicle was rebuilt piece by piece. A folder with various invoices from the subcontractors and a complete photo documentation of the restoration are available. The result: an uncompromising rebuild with many small improvements such as seats with headrests (original seats are still available), or conversion to 12 volts. No expense or effort was spared here. In 2022, the finished gem was then sold to a renowned lawyer in Hamburg, who is now parting with this perfect glass with a heavy heart. The condition is still as good as new. This delightful convertible has only been used sporadically for local classic car events since its restoration and is therefore in fantastic mint condition. The 100 hp 1.7 litre engine is powerful and can easily cope with the 1200 kg kerb weight of the GLAS GT. The gearbox shifts precisely and the braking system has very responsive deceleration behaviour. The soft top including the panelling are also in mint condition. We have never before been able to store such a perfectly restored Glas Cabriolet in our halls. This Glas GT currently has German registration papers including a registration certificate as a classic car.

Summary

This GLAS GT 1700 Cabriolet is a design highlight from the house of "Frua". An absolute heartbreaker with a very high rarity value, quite simply a classic that will never lose its appeal. In short, a ravishing icon awaits the friend of German/Italian driving culture. Pure driving pleasure, the fascinating engine, the timeless elegant design, the marvellous driving comfort, all this is a beguiling mix whose fascination continues even after almost 60 years. The dashboard with its beautifully shaped six VDO round instruments and pull switches is reminiscent of aircraft construction and set standards in the 1960s. The very lively Glass Club ensures an almost seamless supply of spare parts. We or our new sister company Scuderia Sportiva Servizio (ex Alfa Classic Centre) in Dortmund are happy to take over the service.
