Beschrijving

The Aston Martin DB2/4 was a development of the earlier DB2 model and first shown at the 1953 London Motor Show. The most significant change was the addition of two occasional seats in the rear, together with an opening tailgate, which not only allowed 4 people to travel in the car, but also improved the luggage capacity and gave better access. Furthermore in this respect, the rear seat backrest could be folded down.

Initially powered by the VB6E 2.6 litre Lagonda straight-6 engine used in the Vantage version of the earlier DB2, this was developed into a 2,922 cc version – the VB6J - raising claimed power to 140 hp and maximum speed to 120 mph. The Motor magazine tested a 2.9 litre DB2/4 in 1954 and achieved a top speed of 118.5 mph together with a 0-60 mph time of 10.5 seconds.

The DB2/4 Mark II model was introduced at the 1955 London Motor Show in October 1955. Whilst it had the same chassis and mechanical specification as the outgoing DB2/4 – including the 2.9 litre VB6J engine, there were some changes to the coachwork, which had moved to the Tickford Coachbuilding Works in Newport Pagnell, following the acquisition of the company by the David Brown Corporation (Aston Martin’s parent) in 1954.

The Mk II is 2 inches longer and the roofline was raised by ¾ inch to provide extra head room inside. The bonnet was re-designed, so that the side panels remain fixed to the chassis – chrome strips marking the separation edge – thus reducing the weight of the open bonnet. Small tailfins were added to the rear of the car, together with matching bubble-type taillights. Inside, the seats had better shape.

Production of the Mk II lasted just a couple of years, ending in 1957, with 199 vehicles all told being built. Of these, the 2-door hatchback Coupe accounted for the majority – a little under 150 cars.

The DB2/4 Mk II offered here was first registered on 22 November 1956, but little else is known of its history until it was purchased by a new owner in the early 1960s, who then kept the car for 56 years. During this time the car was well cared for and maintained by the knowledgeable owner, who was a member of the AM Owners Club. The current owner acquired the vehicle in 2018. Sadly, owing to the previous long-term owner’s deteriorating health, not all the historic paperwork and invoices have been kept with the car.

Mechanically, the vehicle has been carefully maintained and is in very good condition, running and driving very well. Specifically of note, the chassis is very original, solid and in good condition.

The body is sound and in good condition. It is known that the car was originally maroon and was repainted red some years ago. Whilst the finish still looks very presentable, it is evident there has been some moisture incursion during the painting process. Looking around the engine bay and underside of the car however, it is obvious the car has been very well looked after and maintained.

Exterior trim is all present, correct and in good condition, as are the painted wire wheels.

The magnolia leather interior, tan Wilton carpets and Union cloth headlining are in excellent condition, having been very recently re- trimmed.

This is a relatively rare and desirable Aston Martin from the early David Brown period of marque ownership, which helped cement the public image of the firm producing prestigious, sporting/touring vehicles.

It is in a very good condition – ready for a new owner to use.
