2000 | Rover Mini Cooper 40 - Limited Edition

Over the 40+ year production life of the Mini, numerous special edition models were created. Just prior to the final year of manufacture - in 2000 - Rover Cars created the ‘John Cooper Limited Edition 40’, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Cooper's victories in the Formula One World Championship in 1959 and 1960.

These cars were made in very limited numbers – only 300 – and finished in just one colour scheme - Brooklands Green with the roof and bonnet stripes in Old English White. They were fitted with 13” alloy wheels; flared wheelarches; additional spotlamps; John Cooper signature badges and a bespoke interior. Of these cars, a number were further upgraded by John Cooper Garages to ‘S Works’ specification, which most notably boosted engine output to a claimed 90 bhp – making them the most powerful Coopers made.

The car we have for sale is one of the very few – believed less than 50 – Cooper-modified Limited Edition 40 models and bears the appropriate John Cooper S Works commission plate. It was supplied new in Jersey, by local Rover agent St Helier Garages, in March 2000. It has covered a limited mileage in the island, with a dealer-stamped service history up to 2016 (26,579 miles) after which, it was stored for a while and subsequently underwent some refurbishment work to return it to its current pristine condition.

Per the John Cooper Brochure the mechanical upgrades comprise: a new, fully ported 5-stage cylinder head, polished and gas-flowed with a modified inlet manifold and larger inlet valves. Compression ratio is raised to 10.1:1 and roller rockers have been fitted. Fuel pressure has been increased and the injection and throttle bodies matched to suit. A redesigned air-cleaner is fitted to improve breathing together with a new exhaust system. The S Works commission plate is present for car - number 067.

The car is in excellent mechanical condition and runs very well.

The bodywork, brightwork and wheels are all in fine condition. The refurbishment works carried out by the present owner included a full respray and fitment of a new Webasto sunroof. The car has its full complement of the appropriate ‘S Works’ motifs and red-backed Cooper badges.

The model-specific interior features Grenadine red leather upholstery throughout, with an engine-turned aluminium dashboard sporting magnolia faced dials and a fitted CD player. All in very good condition.

This is a very special limited edition model Mini – only a very small number were ever created. It has an exclusive and luxurious interior, allied to a useful power upgrade. In addition it is a genuine low mileage car which is in excellent all-round condition. A rare find and worthy of any Mini enthusiast’s attention.

Supplied with original handbook and service record, which carries a John Cooper Garages supplier’s stamp and the rear window carries a John Cooper Garages supplier’s decal.
