The Z3 2.8:
The 6-cylinder Z3's became available from 1996 onwards and came in the form of the 2.8 and the Z3M with a 3.2L engine respectively. The 2.8 straight-six was coded M52 and received a technical update in 1998 (codes as M52TU) targetting improved driveability and durability. The TU featured double VANOS for improved low-end torque, a smoother throttle response thanks to the introduction of drive-by-wire, a redesigned cooling system with a built-in thermostat** **and improved plumbing as well as an updated ECU in the form of the Siemens MS42.
Power output was on par with 193 hp and 280 Nm of torque and a redline of 6.500 rpm. Bare in mind, Z3's only come in at just over 1.300 kg so a 2.8 is a fast beast. The 2.8's were fitted from factory with the so-called "wide-body" bodywork, giving the Z3 a notoriously more muscular stance with considerably wider arches on both front and rear. Even a powerbulge on the bonnet was incorporated into the near timeless design. A 2.8 Z3 was always intended to be a driver's car and is therefore best suited with a manual gearbox, specifically the wonderful ZF S5-31 5-speed, exactly the same gearbox that was utilised in the Z3M's. Z3 2.8's present a very interesting proposition in today's market. An open-top, naturally aspirated six cylinder, manual gearbox and timeless design with plenty of creature comforts to allow for near daily use. BMW don't make them like this anymore, and nor does any other brand for that matter. Z3M's have long taken off in terms of prices, but great 2.8's are certainly on our radar and the one we're presenting right here is up there with the best!
This Z3:
Chassis no. LE62328 left the factory on the 27th of January 1999 and was first registered on the 18th of March by supplying dealer BMW Beckers of Genk. Specified in the superb spec of Donkelgrün II (a solid Green, similar to British Racing Green) over an extended Sand Beige leather Oregon interior. The car was specified very tastefully with a manual gearbox and numerous optional extra's as well as the sought-after RS724 17" BMW BBS wheels. These are an original BMW factory option and were reportedly only available on later cars and very sought-after today. They suit the Z3 very well and give it a superb stance. The car has remained in Belgium throughout its entire life, meaning the accompanied Carpass is continuous and mileage is warranted year-on-year. Service history is exceptional, documented in the service booklet as well as all invoices and period documentation imaginable. Literally all documents are present in two (yes two) dedicated history files. The history file gives you the full experience from the original Z3 brochures, price lists, spec quotations and the original purchasing invoice. A car cannot be documented better, than this example.
Today the Z3 presents mint in all aspects. Technically very well kept on top of and aesthetcially just so. The interior is near new and just shows minor signs of use. The softtop has gotten a new window for clear visability (the old one showed its age). The softtop is still the original one and does have some signs of use but is still very presentable. The car is accompanied by a matching hardtop too, which is near new. This Z3 has been used as a weekend tourer only and has beenk cherished as such, which can be seen by the mileage as it creaped up steadily every year. This Z3 was last serviced in Summer 2024 and has seen minor useage since, it is currently suited with four near new Vredestein Ultracs and needs nothing before being used as intended in the forthcoming Summer! A nice upgrade is the period-looking Blaupunkt radio, which is actually a modern Bluetooth/DAB radio so you can stream with your phone. Perfect for those longer trips! Currently with Belgian documents, but the car can be supplied on Dutch plates for the asking price as well. We ship worldwide and handle the process from start to finish, so feel free to ask for a shipping quote.
