Introduced in May 1972, the 3.0 CSL was a special car that BMW homologated to make the car eligible to compete in the European Touring Car Championship. 1,265 were built. The "L" in the designation stood for leicht (light), unlike in other BMW designations where it meant lang (long). The lightness was achieved by using thinner steel, removing chrome and soundproofing, and using Perspex side windows.

This car now has the appearance of the final version of the 3.0 CSL that was homologated in July 1973 with an aerodynamic package including a large spoiler, short fins along the front fenders, a spoiler above and behind the rear roof edge, and a high rear wing. The rear wings were never installed from the factory but left in the trunk for installation after purchase. This was done because the wings were illegal to use on German roads. The complete aero package gave the racing CSLs the nickname "Batmobile."
