Every so often, a car comes through our doors that feels like stepping into a bygone era of elegance and craftsmanship. And this 1936 Bentley 4¼-Litre Drophead Coupe, registration CXM 103, is exactly that-a stunningly preserved piece of Bentley's legacy that embodies everything we love about pre-war motoring. This isn't just any Bentley; with its rare Park Ward drophead coupe body, it's a prime example of the exclusivity and allure that defined Bentley's golden age.

Bentley manufactured only 2,322 vehicles between 1933 and 1939, with Park Ward producing bodies for just 995 of them. Of those, only 47 were built as drophead coupes on the 4¼-litre chassis, making this car an exceptionally rare find. Originally delivered by Jack Barclay Ltd. to Mr. Eric W. Butler in May 1936, this Bentley was finished in maroon with black wings and wheels and upholstered in brown leather-a tasteful combination that's as sophisticated today as it was nearly a century ago.

Under the bonnet, this Bentley has a fascinating history. It began life with engine N8BT, though at some point it was fitted with engine P4BS, which originally belonged to a Mulliner-bodied Bentley saloon from the same era. This swap only adds to the car's unique story and provides a fitting tribute to Bentley's coach-built heritage, where each vehicle has its own personality and history.

The current owner acquired the car in 2008, bringing it back to its original registration, CXM 103, and since then, it's been lovingly maintained to keep it in top form. Here's a quick rundown of the major work completed:

2008-2009: A major engine overhaul with piston reboring, radiator core servicing, water pump repair, and an oil filter update.
2016: Electrical and fuel system servicing, including a new petrol pump and ignition coils.
2023: Engine servicing, radiator flush, and new battery and tyres.
2024: Headlining replacement following minor interior damage, restoring it to its' former glory.

Driving this Bentley is an experience unto itself. With its grand proportions, pre-war charm, and impressive pedigree, it's the kind of car that commands attention without even trying. This particular example has only covered around 2,000 miles since 2008, mostly in the picturesque countryside of Hampshire and Sussex-a perfect setting for a car of such timeless appeal.

Whether you're a Bentley collector or simply someone who appreciates the romance of pre-war motoring, this CXM 103 is a truly special offering. It's elegant, it's rare, and it's a beautifully preserved piece of British automotive history. A car like this doesn't come around often, and for the right person, it's bound to be a cherished companion for years to come.
