General info:
In the early 1970s it was time for Alfa Romeo to renew the model range. The Alfa Romeo Giulia, on which the Alfa Romeo Berlina was also based, had been in production since 1962 and was due for renewal. In 1972 the Alfetta 1800 succeeded the smallest Berlina, the 1750. The Berlina 2000 would remain in production until 1977. The Alfetta 1.8 got the engine from the Berlina 1750, a four-cylinder inline engine with two overhead camshafts and 1779 cc. The Alfetta delivered 121 hp, had a top speed of 180 km/h and sprinted from zero to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds. The suspension and drive of the Alfetta changed completely compared to the Berlina. The gearbox and clutch were built in the rear of the sedan (transaxle) and the rear suspension was a De Dion axle, just like the historic Alfetta 159. The result was ideal weight distribution and superb handling. Giorgetto Giugiaro took care of the appearance of the Alfetta.
Two years later, in 1974, the Alfetta 1.8 received a minor facelift and was joined by the Alfetta 1.6 with only round headlights and the 1570 cc engine from the Giulia. In that year, based on the Alfetta, a successor was also built for the Giulia Sprint. The car received the type designation Alfetta GT 1800 with a 115 hp engine and was a fastback coupé. This GT was, as the name suggests, a real Gran Turismo: the car was sporty in appearance, performance and handling, but was not as spartan as a real sports car. The GT was therefore sufficiently comfortable for long everyday rides. Again the design bureau of Giugiaro took care of the design and in terms of design the Alfetta GT shows some similarities with the Alfa Romeo Montreal. In the same year the Alfetta 2000 was also built for the American market with a 1962 cc engine. From 1977 the Alfetta 2000 was also available in Europe and the Berlina 2000 also had a successor. The Alfetta 2000 looked slightly different from the 1800 and 1600: it had a longer nose with straight headlights, larger bumpers and larger taillights.
