Description

  • One of only 37 cars built to LHD specification
  • Beautiful Garnet coachwork
  • Parchment Connolly Hide interior
  • Recent extensive recommissioning service
  • Documented by copies of its factory build records

Launched in 1962, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III and its Bentley S3 equivalent employed the 6.2-litre V8 engine introduced on the 'Cloud II/S2 - though with larger carburetors, new distributor and raised compression ratio - and came with a four-speed GM-derived automatic transmission as standard equipment. Most obvious among many changes from the preceding models was the adoption of four-headlamp lighting, the absence of sidelights from the wing tops, and a slightly lower radiator shell. Inside there was improved accommodation with separate front seats and increased room for rear passengers. Notable as the last mainstream Rolls-Royce to employ a separate chassis, the Silver Cloud III proved immensely successful both at home and abroad, remaining in production until the autumn of 1965.

Presented in Garnet with Beige leather interior, this previously restored 'Chinese Eye' Silver Cloud III was built new for the American market and specified to U.S. specifications with;

  • Radio
  • Electric antenna
  • Plain Sundym glass all around
  • Electric windows in both doors,
  • Whitewall Firestone tires

According to copies of the factory build records, LSFU123 was delivered to Mulliner Park Ward on 9th December 1963, completed for delivery 12th March 1964, and swiftly loaded aboard the good ship 'Media' in Liverpool the next day, bound for New York City. The original owner was Fred W. Graupner of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, who bought the car through J.S.Inskip on July 11, 1964.

Graupner only retained his Rolls for two months, trading it in on 24th September 1964. The car appears to have very shortly thereafter come into the collection of Robert Frank of Delray Beach, Florida. Frank would retain the car for decades, listing it for sale in The Flying Lady in the summer of 2002. Describing the car as a machine, the ad at the time stated the Rolls featured updated air conditioning, new leather, wood, carpets, headliner, and tires, and was in excellent condition. The Rolls was acquired by the current owner just under a decade ago and has been on static display ever since.

A rare and stylish machine, this regal coupe will no doubt provide ample enjoyment to its next, fortunate owner.
