1938 | Rolls-Royce Phantom III
Description
1938 Rolls Royce Phantom 3 Sedanca by Schutter & Van Bakel.
Chassis Number: 3-DL-140
Registration Number: UK Applied for.
A very unusual Rolls Royce Phantom 3 with a Dutch body by Schutter & Van Bakel of Amsterdam who had also previously bodied a Phantom 2 Continental along with assorted Alfa Romeo's & Bugattis. The coachwork takes the form of a very elegant razor edged brougham which would not look out of place on a 1920's car.
Originally the car was ordered for Dr Fritz Mannheimer, Hobbemastraat 20, Amsterdam, Netherlands: 1890 – 9 August 1939 Born in Germany and a banker in the Netherlands. Noted art collector.
The second owner was Willem J. R. Dreesmann (1885-1954) from Amsterdam, once Chairman of Vroom & Dreesmann N.V., the largest retail store chain of the Netherlands and one of the larger store chains in the world once. A portrait of him is found at the end of our photo gallery. His name is recognizable on the A.N.W.B. plate (Koninklijke Nederlandse Toeristenbond) on the car. It was exported to the USA & later was repatriated by noted dealer the late Charles Howard.
This is a car that has done very few miles & is in impeccable condiiton underneath. The engine runs silently & is smooth & powerful. The odomoeter shows a recorded 68,000 miles which we would supect to be correct given the complete absence of wear to the pedals & taut tight play free feel to the steering.
We are currently in the process of giving the car a major service & UK registering it. It was previously dutch registered with the plate HZ30869
Exterior paintwork is black & in generally very good order. The bonnet is of polished aluminium to the tops & sides. A red hand painted coachline accentuates the black body work. A new sedanca soft top covering with header rail & snap on fasteners is currently being fabricated for the car.
To the front of the car is non original black leather in very very good condition. A full set of original small tools is found under the passengers front seat in its appointed place. To the back is plush dark blue velour original to the car along with dark blue headlining. Maroon privacy blinds are found over the side & rear widows. Two occasional seats fold out of the bulkhead making this car a true 7 seat vehicle.
Oil pressure is good & more importantly the car runs cool. with no overheating tendencies. The gear box is seamless & a pleasure to use with butter smooth synchromesh on all gears. Make no mistake: This is a grand & opulent car attracting admiring glances wherever it appears. It is being sold freshly serviced & in super running condiiton.
