Description
BMC (not to be confused with British Leyland) envisioned the MGC as a spiritual successor to the classic Austin-Healey 3000, with one model fading away as the other emerged. Built on the MGB's monocoque chassis, the MGC featured a redesigned six-cylinder engine reminiscent of the Healey 3000. While its appearance closely resembles the MGB—differentiated only by subtle bonnet bulges and larger wheels—the MGC offers a distinct driving experience beneath its familiar exterior. However, the heavy 2912cc engine does limit its agility compared to the MGB. Despite this, if you're seeking a sports car that excels at lower engine speeds and provides an effortless driving experience, the MGC is an excellent choice. Interestingly, MGCs are now more appreciated than they were in the late 1960s and have become highly sought after by many MG collectors.
This late-production left-hand drive model was dispatched to California in October 1969, where it remained until its importation to Germany in 1992. Unfortunately, upon import, the German registration authorities assigned it a first registration date of 1967, despite a U.S. Title clearly indicating 1969, as well as an official British Motor Industry Heritage Certificate verifying the build period from June 24 to September 11, 1969.
Matching numbers example:
Chassis: G-CD1-U / 8486-G
Engine: 29GA-RU-H / 4382
Body number: 502053
Upon its import to Germany, the car underwent a frame-off restoration, including a complete engine overhaul (in England), carried out by the second owner. This work is thoroughly documented in an impressive A4 binder. In total, four German owners have enjoyed this vehicle since its arrival:
1992 – 2000 - 1st owner and importer
2000 – 2020 – 2nd owner Restoration 2000-2004
2020 – 2023 – 3rd owner – Gutachten 2020 extensive invoices
2023 – 2024 – 4th owner
This impressive example comes with a Bill of Sale from 1992, reflecting a mileage of 87,200 miles. Therefore, it is entirely plausible that the current reading of 11,582 represents an original total of 111,582 miles. This car has been exceptionally well-maintained since arriving in Germany, making it a fantastic option for any prospective owner or indeed MG collector.
