Description
1931 MG F1 Magna
The MG F-Type Magna, released in 1931, was the first MG to be built in Abingdon. It was developed to fill a gap in the market that Cecil Kimber had discovered between the very successful MG M-Type Midget and the MG 18/80, which was only produced in small numbers.
Put simply, the first MG F-Type, which was given the nickname ‘Magna’, could be described as an extended MG M-Type Midget powered by a 6-cylinder 1271 cc engine from the Wolseley Hornet. However, MG had not simply taken over the Wolseley engine with its overhead camshaft, which was quite advanced for the time, but had modified it optically and technically for use in the MG F-Type, among other things with a new intake manifold with two SU carburettors, and thus brought it up to 37 hp, which was generated at 4100 rpm. The axles and brakes came from the D-Type Midget, the four-seater successor to the M-Type with a 4-cylinder engine, which was built in small numbers in 1931 and 1932.
This first MG F-Type, which looked extremely attractive with its long bonnet, was available in three versions: As the F1 Magna it was available as a four-seater tourer and four-seater saloonette, as the F2 it was a two-seater and the F3 was an improved version of the four-seater F1.
In total, MG sold 1250 MG F-Types until it was replaced by the L-Type Magna in 1933, 565 of which were F1 Magnas. Around 30 of these are still in existence today
