Description

The Mercedes-Benz 190SL (W121) was a stylish, high-performance grand tourer that combined luxury with sporting pedigree. Introduced in 1955 as a more affordable alternative to the iconic 300SL, the 190SL featured a 1.9L SOHC inline-four engine.

Though more of a grand tourer than a pure sports car, the 190SL's handling is composed and paired with the 4-speed manual gearbox, the car delivers smooth yet engaging shifts, making it a favorite among driving enthusiasts.

This late production 190SL was delivered on January the 17th 1963 to its first owner, Mr. Ed Jones, in Metairie, Louisiana. Mr. Ed Jones took delivery of his 190SL, just 3 months before the presentation of its successor, the 230SL, at the Geneva Motor Show.

Just 104 examples of the 190SL were produced in 1963, the last year of production.

Clearly wishing to savour the effortless open top cruising and elegance of the 190SL, Mr. Jones and the 190SL must have appreciated the warm and sunny climate of Louisiana.

Whether a practical man or just because Mr. Jones wanted the complete package like so many enthusiasts and collectors of today, the 190SL came with the optional hard top with enlarged rear window as was custom on the later 190SL’s. This hardtop naturally follows the car and presents equally beautiful.

According to the original ‘Mercedes-Benz Service Policy’ accompanying the car, the original engine is the one still in the car.

In the early/mid 1990s the 190SL underwent a comprehensive restoration by the previous owner in the US. Handwritten notes accompany the car detailing the work carried out. Shortly after restoration the 190SL was sold and imported to Europe where it stayed with the same gentleman owner in Denmark for almost 25 years. Advancing years of the owner forced him to sell the 190SL on to its current owner, also in Denmark.

During current ownership the car was resprayed in black to keep it in mint condition.

The odomoeter reads 38.171 Miles, which is safe to say, is the actual mileage since restoration. Both inside and outside the 190SL presents immaculately. The sumptous red leather seats are as new, the dashboard presents beautifully with all chrome detailing in beautiful condition.  The original Becker Mexico radio is still fitted.

The engine starts on the button and the gearshift is smooth and precise, exactly as it should be. One look in the engine compartment gives you a very good indication of the quality workmanship that went into the restoration of this 190SL.

A blend of timeless design, mechanical refinement, and an engaging ride, the 190SL remains a cherished classic, embodying the elegance and engineering excellence of Mercedes-Benz.

The 190SL has lived a pampered life with a collector of cars in recent years and is ready to be enjoyed on the road.
