1962 | Ford Consul MkI Convertible

This is the most original, low mileage Ford Consul we’ve ever offered for sale, and it has been known to us for 25 years. We relocated to North Yorkshire in 1998, and since the following year, this car has been owned by our local gardener who bought it in October 1999. It has been a regular sight on local roads on sunny summer days, and we have exhibited the Consul several times at the local Malton Show. The previous owner had bought this superbly original car, which had spent many years in Skegness, in May 1996 with just 40,400 miles from new.

The earliest service record we have is from May 1971, at a mileage of 37,800 miles, when a routine 5000 miles service and MOT was carried out. Duckhams service stamps from the 1970s show it was covering just a few hundred miles each year. Remarkably, the car has covered only 21,000 miles in the 54 years since then! In 1995, the car had a brake overhaul, and a reconditioned steering box was fitted later the same year. Electrical polarity was changed to Negative earth the following year. The car has been well maintained over its lifetime and in 2018 a top-end overhaul was done with a cylinder head skim, new exhaust valves and re-seated inlets. In 2019, at 57,351 miles the car came to our sister company Malton Coachworks for a significant mechanical overhaul and four new tyres. This included a new clutch, rear axle work to cure an oil leak, brake overhaul, heater matrix repair and a major service. In total the work cost £2020.




The level of originality of this car is just astonishing. This is not a restored car brought back to life, but an original car with an authenticity and patina that is unrepeatable. On the road the car drives perfectly with good synchros on the three-speed column-change gearbox, and firm, reassuring brakes. The engine is smooth and quiet. This is a rare convertible to preserve and enjoy. We will not see its like again. Available only because of the advancing years of a long-term owner this really is a gem that is sure to please.
