Description

A much-respected marque, although Alfa Romeo can be said to have started in 1910, the name was not used until after the First World War. In 1923, Alfa enticed gifted engineer Vittorio Jano to leave Fiat and, as chief engineer from 1925, Jano developed a 1500 cc single OHC straight six-cylinder engine, followed by DOHC versions in both 1500 and 1750 cc displacements. The ‘6C’ name given to these engines was used on road, race and sports cars produced by the company between 1927 and 1954.

In the early years, most of the cars were sold as rolling chassis and bodied by a number of different coachbuilders such as Carrozzeria Touring, James Young, Zagato, Touring Superleggera, Castagna, and Pinin Farina. The more powerful 1750 cc engine was introduced in 1929.

The 6C 1750 Turismo offered here was first registered new in the UK in July 1930. We know little more of its early history until the 1960’s when it was acquired by a new long-term owner, who commissioned mechanical and bodywork restorations to get the car back into a fully roadworthy condition. In the hands of another owner and a dealer during the 80’s, the Alfa has subsequently been in long term ownership in Guernsey, in the hands of a mechanical engineer and enthusiast, who has ensured the vehicle has been properly maintained and well looked after.

Being the Turismo model, this car has the SOHC, single carburettor variant of the 1750 6C engine, with a claimed 46 bhp, and near 70mph top speed. The current owner reports that the Alfa will cruise comfortably at 55-60mph, having used it for European travel and attending car events. The car has been well maintained, receiving new components (e.g. a clutch) as and when required.

The Alfa was bodied by English coachbuilders James Young Limited, of Bromley, who provided top class coachwork from 1908 until the firm’s closure in 1968. It is believed that only 3 examples of the 1750 Turismo were built with James Young bodywork. This car has the long wheelbase chassis – providing a more spacious interior for passengers and wind-up widows in rear. The body remains in very good condition (it was re-painted in the 1970’s) with only a few small blemishes to reflect its regular use. The hood was also replaced in the 1970’s and is in good shape. The wire wheels are in good condition and all exterior trim appears present and correct.

The interior is generally very good - some re-trimming was carried out during 1970 renovation work and the leather seats shows some patination. The interior woodwork is all complete and in good order.

This is a very rare and desirable vintage open touring car, boasting sophisticated engineering and a sporty demeanour. It is in a very good, usable condition, having been well cared for and maintained by its current owner.

The car is currently Guernsey registered and we can assist with shipping and  importation processes if required. We can ship worldwide.
