It makes sense why so many enthusiasts deem the Porsche 911 the ultimate classic car. Thanks to its unique and exciting driving dynamics, outstanding build quality, and legendary reliability, classic 911 ownership sidesteps many of the pitfalls usually associated with having an old car in your garage. With nearly 60 years of continuous production, selecting the proper classic 911 can be daunting- but without a doubt, one of the most sought-after generations is the long wheelbase, short bumper cars built between 1969 and 1973. Although the earlier short-wheelbase cars are known for their lively handling and revvy small displacement motors, the long-wheelbase cars are far more refined and much better all-around vehicles. In 1973, the 911 was offered in 3 trim lines, the carburated “T”, the fuel-injected “E”, and the highest-performing “S”- all of which were powered by a stout 2.4-liter air-cooled flat 6.

This 1973 Porsche 911 S is a stunning example that was subject to a comprehensive restoration, which was completed about one year ago. Finished in its original color of Aubergine, this car presents in exceptional condition throughout and its slightly obscure color looks great - especially when paired with the significant brightwork found on these early cars. As it is one of the later “long hood” 911s, it did receive the slightly more pronounced bumper overriders, but, these do a great job of keeping the freshly restored car safe from wayward parkers who would otherwise destroy your fresh paint. Up front, a sporty-looking “S” air dam helps keep the nose down, and the famous 5-spoke Fuchs wheels tie the whole look together.

Inside, the comfortable front seats are a unique combination of tan vinyl outers with matching tan corduroy fabric centers, which actually do a remarkable job of holding you in place on the otherwise rather flat seats. In typical 911 fashion, the beautifully simple 5-guage dash is laid out right in front of you, and is framed by a newer Momo Prototipo wheel which gives a bit of extra heft over the standard wheel, and just looks great.

Powering this 911 S is a 2.4-liter air-cooled flat-6 which is fed by a mechanical fuel injection system. With a 7,300 rpm redline, this motor was rated at 190 horsepower and 158 lb-ft of torque when it was new and thanks to a full mechanical reconditioning, it is likely right around that number today. The engine is not numbers matching to the chassis, but many of these cars were driven hard in period and received replacement engines- for all intents and purposes, this is the exact powerplant the car would have come with from the factory. Power is then sent through a 5-speed manual transaxle to the rear wheels. One of the most unique parts of this car is that it is reportedly 1 of 4 1973 911 S’ to come factory equipped with a limited-slip differential.

The 1973 Porsche 911 S is about as refined as the 911 got in this era, before the move to the heavier, less pure-looking “impact bumper” cars in 1974. If you have been on the hunt for a classic 911, this car is a great option, offered in a unique and appealing color combination, and with a full cosmetic and mechanical restoration, the car is ready to be enjoyed!
