The Métallurgique 14HP from 1912 is a timeless example of Belgian engineering and luxury from the early 20th century. Belgium, once home to many car manufacturers, had another famous "M" besides Minerva: Métallurgique. Founded in 1898, Métallurgique started producing locomotives, trams, and railway equipment in Marchienne-au-Pont before shifting to automobile production. The brand began its automotive journey six years before Minerva and quickly became a symbol of technical innovation and prestige.
Historical Context
The factory in Marchienne-au-Pont, located in Belgium's industrial heartland, thrived during the early Industrial Revolution. Initially producing heavy locomotives, Métallurgique began manufacturing cars in 1900. Early models gained significant popularity in England, attracting prestigious clients such as Lord Carnarvon, patron of the Tutankhamun expedition and resident of Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey), as well as Charles Royce, co-founder of Rolls-Royce, and Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich of Russia. The brand also counted the King of Morocco and the Spanish and Portuguese royal families among its clients.
Renowned for building high-quality, powerful vehicles, Métallurgique's models featured engines with outputs of 60, 70, 90, and even 120 hp. These were not racing cars but luxurious vehicles designed for speed and comfort. The brand achieved success in international competitions, including the Herkomer Tour, Kaiserspreis, Prinz-Heinrich-Fahrt, and Tourist Trophy.
In 1907, Métallurgique introduced its iconic pointed radiator, the first of its kind to be mass-produced. This distinctive design, combined with technical excellence, made the cars instantly recognizable and highly sought after.
The Métallurgique 14HP (1912)
The 14HP is one of Métallurgique's more accessible models, embodying the brand's craftsmanship and innovation.
Technical Specifications
· Engine: Four-cylinder inline engine, approximately 2.7 liters, producing 14 hp, designed for reliability and smooth operation.
· Transmission: Manual 4-speed gearbox, advanced for its time.
· Drive: Rear-wheel drive, typical for the era.
Design and Luxury
The 14HP features an elegant torpedo design with a long hood and open bodywork. The interior exudes luxury with leather seats and a wooden dashboard. Wooden spoked wheels and the signature pointed radiator enhance its exclusivity.
Historical Significance
Métallurgique's production ended in 1928 following its acquisition by Imperia-Excelsior. The factory was sold to Minerva, and chief engineer Paul Bastian emigrated to the United States to work for Stutz.
Rarity and Admiration
Métallurgique cars are extremely rare today. Examples can be found in museums like the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum in the USA, the Lakeland Motor Museum in England, and the Nelson Classic Car Museum in New Zealand. Owning one is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
