The Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda, manufactured between 1963 and 1971, stands as a classic and iconic automobile, epitomising timeless automotive design. Belonging to the esteemed "W113" series, it succeeded the 230SL and 250SL models. The distinctive "Pagoda" moniker originates from its unique removable hardtop, featuring a concave shape reminiscent of a pagoda roof.

Powering the 280SL is a robust 2.8-litre inline-six-cylinder engine, generating approximately 170 horsepower. Transmission options included a 4-speed automatic and an optional 4-speed manual. Noteworthy for its excellent suspension set-up, the 280SL provides a blend of enhanced handling and ride comfort.

Internally, the 280SL boasts a luxurious cabin with features such as leather seats and wood trim, showcasing Mercedes-Benz' meticulous attention to detail and quality craftsmanship. Modern conveniences of its time, such as power steering contribute to the car's allure.

Hilton & Moss is proud to offer this Mercedes-Benz W113 280SL Pagoda. This particular Pagoda is an exceedingly rare 280SL Auto ‘California Coupe.’ Originally intended for the US market, it came with a removable hardtop, but no soft top. Instead, a removable drop-down rear bench seat was fitted. The car now features a navy soft top while retaining its bench seat and hardtop.

Delivered new to its first owner, Mr. C.H. Raymond on May 24, 1968 by Daimler Benz North America, the Mercedes was sold for $7,400. Maintaining its original MB304 Horizon Blue colour and MB245 Blue leather interior, this Pagoda looks stunning with both body and interior presenting well, adorned with a charming patina, enhancing its usability.

Having overseen the sale of this exceptional car on multiple occasions, we can attest that it stands unrivalled in its class, arguably one of the finest Pagodas available. Imported to the UK in 2015, it found its way to two previous owners, both long-term Hilton & Moss customers, who entrusted us with its sale once again.

Under previous ownership, the car received meticulous maintenance, including a gearbox refresh, a rebuilt steering rack, rear brake overhaul, and various health checks and full services. Since arriving in the UK, a Euro front and rear headlamp conversion has been completed, enhancing its appearance. The car comes with a comprehensive history folder documenting works completed, importation into the UK, MOT certificates, original owners manual and wallet, and its original bill of sale —a rare historical document. The odometer reads 97,643, with minimal mileage covered in recent years, the car has been stored in a dry environment since import.

In summary, the 280SL Pagoda has garnered acclaim among classic car enthusiasts and collectors for its aesthetic appeal and engineering excellence. The Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda is an automotive masterpiece seamlessly combining classic design, performance and luxury, making it a sought-after gem in the classic motor car world.
