Finished in Jaguar Opalescent Golden Sand with St. James Red hide, carpets trimmed to match with leather binding. The detail and quality to the cabin is exquisite – all the screw heads are regimentally turned inline of each other, the headlining is West of England Wool – the finest of materials used. The Burr Walnut wood work is gleaming throughout, the fitment of 15 inch sports 3 spoke steering wheel which allows more room for the driver and this has also been veneered to match the wood set. Inertia 3-point safety belts have also been trimmed in St James Red to match, chrome fittings with Jaguar leaping cat’s- no expense spared.
Rolling off the factory line 29th September 1952 this example was dispatched the following month to Hoffman’s of NY. We believe that the cars first owner had been Mr Grosskopf of Ohio, the XK stayed in his ownership from 1953 to 1998, just over 45 years single ownership. Following Mr Grosskopfs passing the car was then passed into the ownership of his son, Jim who owned the car for next 7 years before the car crossing the ‘Big Pond’ back home to the UK. Aquired by UK collector the car underwent a body off, nut and bolt restoration - on file we have the complete photographic record of these works. There has been huge amount of pride and all-important attention to detail gone into the restoration, even to all the important areas you do not see. The door skins and wooden sections inside the door replaced – a masterful art to get this right on this series of car, chassis stripped and powder coated to last the sands of time. New peddle box fabricated, bright work removed and chromed – correct instrument gauges soured and fitted (this alone to source is a task with in itself) but the final result was well worth the hard lines put into making this car what it is today.
The men who restored this car wanted to showcase their skill set and to the trained eye, it makes that statement - you only notice these incredibly small details when you examine the car at close quarters. Custom made chrome headlamp rings with integrated wire mesh protection, you initially think this had been added and bolts onto the head lamp itself but it is in fact one piece of beautiful chrome - incredible. Polished rocker covers in the engine bay distract you away from the custom handmade aluminium cover over the steering column and polished ignition coil. You then notice the 12-volt alternator and secret cooling fan at the rear of the radiator. A custom-made stainless exhaust single branch running through the chassis and back to two as it comes out – superb rasp and pitch. XK140 steering rack and 150 callipers and discs fitted for improved stopping power, gleaming chrome wire wheels with Vredestein tyres.
In October 1952, the Jaguar XK120 special equipment Coupé was road tested for the first time by Autocar; at that time it was not for sale in Great Britain and for export only unless you were a racing drive, Brown Lane made an exception to the rule. Tantalising for enthusiasts who had the purchase price ready, after a time, of course, the XK120 Coupé was available on the home market and the model became very popular, especially amongst those who like to travel fast and far. 72 years later and the still has the same fame today!
