Descripción
The Jaguar Mk2 is still one of the most beautiful saloon cars ever made. Introduced in late 1959, it was the improved successor of the Jaguar Mk1, with bigger windows and a wider rear track. Also the interior was rather different compared to the Mk1, with different front seats and completely restyled dashboard. The Jaguar Mk2 remains the one and only original sport saloon, offering great style and a choice of big straight six engines.
This example is rather special. It was ordered with the strongest 3,8 Litre engine in combination with the optional Borg Warner automatic gearbox, and delivered new on the 1st of June 1962 by Henlys of London. The car was purchased by renowned Jaguar restorer Vicarage in the late eighties, to be restored and improved following the well known Vicarage standards. It was actually one of their first demonstrators and appeared in the glossy Vicarage catalogue - then still on its original numberplate 408 ELC. During this restoration, the Mk2 was converted to LHD steering as it was scheduled to be delivered to a USA client.
Vicarage performed the best Jaguar restorations in the eighties and nineties, and had a lot of improvements available to make this classic sport saloon suitable for daily use. Our example has the following options fitted : electrically operated sunroof, electrically operated front and rear windows, improved rear suspension with coil springs instead of standard leaf springs for much better comfort and roadholding, modern Jaguar TH400 automatic 4-speed transmission, Coopercraft brakes, modern power steering, airconditioning, heated rear window, Daimler Double Six front seats,.... In short, a host of modifications that completely change the Jaguar Mk2 driving experience.
As it is an older quality restoration, the interior has now just the right amount of patina and the classic colour combination of British Racing Green with cream interior suits the car perfectly. This Mk2 drives really well and could indeed be used as a daily driver. The last owner has spent a fortune on maintenance and revisions, all performed by the reputed English Jaguar specialist CMC, and this is all documented with eye-watering invoices. Also in the file are period Vicarage brochures, a JDHT Heritage Certificate plus many invoices and documentation.
This splendid Jaguar is a perfect blend between style, luxury and performance. It's a perfect car for everyday use, as it has an automatic gearbox and power steering. The interior is classy and comfortable, and the big straight six engine offers more than adequate performance. Restoring and building a Jaguar Mk2 to this specification today will cost at least double the asking price, so if you are looking for an excellent example for daily use, this one is highly recommended.
