History of the Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato

The successful relationship between Alfa Romeo and Zagato goes back to the 1920s. From the very beginning, the lightest creations came from Zagato. As everything was subordinated to speed, their designs were usually the wildest and most daring. At the end of the 1960s, Alfa Romeo offered the Giulia Super, Spider and GT Junior models. All three models were hugely successful in terms of sales and appealed to buyers' tastes. The Alfa Romeo strategists wanted to tap into new target groups and once again enlisted the help of Zagato. The Alfa Romeo specifications included sporty driving characteristics thanks to a lightweight construction, yet with high torsional rigidity for good handling, as well as an original, independent body shape to differentiate the car from the Spider (Pininfarina design) and GT Junior (Bertone design). At Zagato, Ercole Spada was commissioned with the design and in 1968 the first Zagato with a wedge shape combined with a crested rear end went on sale. After 1108 Junior Zagato 1300s were produced, there was a successor, the Giulia 1600 Z, presented at the Turin Motor Show in November 1972. The 1600 body was built on the floor assembly of the Fastback Spider. At the end of 1975, Alfa Romeo decided to discontinue Zagato production. By then, only 402 units of the successor Giulia 1600 Z had been built.

Description of the Alfa Romeo Zagato 1600 Z -SSC606 offered here

The Alfa Romeo Junior 1600 Zagato offered here is the 71st of a total of 402 examples produced. It was originally first delivered to Sweden and came into the hands of a collector of important Alfa Romeos at the beginning of this millennium. What followed was a technical improvement in a class of its own. In addition to a 2-litre engine rebuilt by an Alfa specialist with approx. 145 stable hp, a locked 2-litre rear axle was installed. The Alfa Classic Center in Dortmund then upgraded this Zagato with ventilated front brake discs, Brembo aluminium brake callipers, CNC-milled Burman steering box, electric fuel pump, front suspension springs with ACC stabiliser, adjustable upper wishbones (GTA), five-spoke Stilauto rims with polished edges and genuine leather upholstery. The body of this Zagato is largely unwelded, although this Alfa was repainted once in the 90s in the delivery colour ‘bianco’. Technically, this Zagato is probably unique, the well-tuned chassis in conjunction with the improved braking system, as well as the performance-optimised 2-litre engine with the matching rear axle always put a grin on the new owner's face. According to the previous owner, this Zagato still has sufficient power reserves even at 200 km/h thanks to its excellent aerodynamics. The body and interior have the character of a year-old car. This Alfa Romeo has been serviced by the Alfa Classic Centre over the last decade and currently has EU registration papers from Monaco.
