Dating back to Porsche’s earliest turbocharged production car, the 930, turbocharged 911s were always rear-wheel drive. When paired with the 911’s unique, rear-biased weight distribution, these cars had notoriously oversteer-prone handling, leading to the infamous “widowmaker” moniker. But with the introduction of the 993 Turbo in 1995, Porsche implemented an all-wheel drive system as they moved the “Turbo” lineup more into the grand touring realm. Yet for the few enthusiasts who still craved the excitement of a rear-wheel drive turbocharged 911, Porsche made a car called the GT2. What started as an ultra-limited production homologation car in the 993 generation became more of a “production” variant for the 996. That being said, the 996 GT2 was just produced between 2001 and 2005 and only 1,287 996 GT2s came out of the Porsche factory over those 4 years.

This 2001 Porsche 911 GT2 was sold new in September 2001 in Paris and remained with the original owner until 2016. Finished in Arctic Silver over black leather, this 996 GT2 shows 38,253 km at the time of cataloging and benefits from a comprehensive service history with both stamps in the log book and some receipts from a combination of main dealers and indepent service centers. The exterior of the GT2 stands out from the more ordinary 996 Turbo thanks to a few unique pieces. To start, the large GT2-specific fixed rear wing provides extra downforce and stability at speed, while also looking great. The front bumper has been revised with larger openings and a vent between the bumper and front bonnet lid, while the rear bumper features extra venting and split-dual exhausts like you would find on an X50 package 996 Turbo. A set of staggered Turbo-Twist wheels sit in front of Porsche’s earliest use of carbon ceramic brakes, which are easily identifiable by the yellow calipers, and offer fade free performance, even under hard use.

The first thing you notice on the interior are the 996’s famed bucket seats - wrapped in black leather, these do a wonderful job of keeping you in place during aggressive driving, and look absolutely fantastic as well. A rear seat delete form the factory reduces weight and provides either extra storage, or a perfect place to install a half cage if you plan to take this car to the track. The 3-spoke sport steering wheel has been rewrapped on the rim utilizing Alcantara and now features red stitching as a nice accent. Extended leather was fitted which wraps on to the dashboard and door cards, and the center stack features the GT3-style deletion of the lower console section.

Sitting in the back of the GT2 is a twin-turbocharged 3.6 liter Mezger flat-6 that is rated at 456 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque. This engine sends power through a 6-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels which makes for a truly exhilarating experience when both turbos are spooled up. With a top speed of nearly 200 mph, the 996 GT2 is capable of running 0-100 kph in just 3.6 seconds and will complete the quarter mile in a mere 12.1. When new, magazines discussed the GT2’s unruly nature and how it would accentuate any of the driver’s bad habits behind the wheel, making it a real challenge to reign in. But those who have returned to the 996 GT2 with hindsight have found that although the GT2 is still exceptionally fast and exciting, in an era of 1,000 horsepower hypercars and modern performance tires, it is totally manageable- just so long as you treat it with the respect it deserves.

The 996 GT2 is one of the rarest 996s and certainly the fastest 911 of that generation. This example presents extremely well and is the perfect car for the enthusiast who wants to really drive and enjoy all of the excitement two turbochargers and rear wheel drive have to offer.
