“Attack of the Sharknose”

1984 BMW M635CSi “GpA” Racecar

Recent complete rebuild

Ready to race

In the mid-1970s, BMW introduced a successor to the highly acclaimed E9 Coupe. The new car, drawn up by influential French designer Paul Bracq, was christened the E24. Its distinctive design and instantly recognizable front fascia earned it the nicknames “Sharknose” and “Bayern-Express.”

The M635CSi sat atop the E24 range as the proverbial apex predator. While most variations were given the more than capable M30 engine, the 635CSi received a major upgrade in the form of BMW’s legendary M88 engine. First found in the M1, this 3,5 litre inline 6-cylinder featured four valves per cylinder and produced up to 286 horsepower, largely thanks to a higher compression and modified ignition and injection systems. Another key difference: as opposed to the regular line of E24 models, the M635CSi was exclusively developed by BMW Motorsport GmbH. Along with a more powerful engine, the 635 was also given a reinforced, five-speed manual transmission, revised chassis and more powerful brake system. Last but not least, the battery was moved to the rear to improve weight distribution and traction.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the M635CSi went on to achieve enormous success in racing all across the globe. In Europe, it most notably secured overall victories in the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps (1983, 1985, 1986) and the Nürburgring 24 Hours (1984 and 1985). Volker Strycek won the inaugural German Production Car Championship in 1984 before it went on to become DTM, while the likes of Helmut Kelleners, Dieter Quester and Roberto Ravaglia took the 635CSi to three overall European Touring Car Championship titles between 1983 and 1986. Outside of Europe, 1985 proved to be particularly fruitful with touring car championship success in Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

The car that we are offering started its life as a road car and was completely restored/prepared in 2007 as a semi Group A racecar in the iconic Jägermeister Livery. The German owner only covered 800 mild kms until 2011 when the car was sold to its current owner, a well-known Dutch collector/racer who in 2018 commissioned a close to GpA rebuild and preparation from Tim Tuning in The Netherlands.  After completion the car was dressed in the lesser known, but very attractive “Bob Jane T-Marts” livery as used in the 1985 Australian championship.
