1979 | Renault R 16 TX

Fantastic Renault 16 TX 5 speed from the latest series. Delivered new in Portugal and excellently maintained. After many dry years, the TX was imported into the Netherlands in 2019 by a Renault enthusiast. You will remember this car from the old days, the R16 was a successful French middle-class car with many innovative details. And in the beautiful TX version also with a dyke of an appearance. A big difference from the standard version; special double headlights, green tinted glass, sporty rims, rear window wiper and, to top it off, the wafer-thin stainless steel rear spoiler.

The exterior is remarkably sleek and repainted in the past in the beautiful original colour ‘Santonge metal verni’, which is very nicely done. Due to the Portuguese sun, a little bit of colour difference can be seen, but no big deal. The doors close excellently and all seams are correct. All weak spots have been carefully addressed in the Netherlands. Inner wings have been fitted to protect the rear and part of the engine compartment has been expertly repainted. So the floors and engine compartment look very good. The rear doors have a few small spots, and I wouldn't do anything with those. It is an honest unrestored TX, and where else do you see them in this nice condition?

The interior is in remarkably nice condition. The fabric upholstery has been renewed in the past, and the seats were then reupholstered. The dashboard is original and all (Jaeger) instruments work as they should. The ‘sporty’ steering wheel is also beautiful, it really has a seventies look. The electric windows and central locking also work as they should.

Technically, this 16 TX is in top condition, and you notice that while driving. The last owner had everything needed done at an R16 specialist. The gearbox has been overhauled, including a new clutch. Also a new water pump, radiator and hoses, brake distributor, ignition switch, light-combi switch, temperature sensor and just the starter motor. New tyres all round, 1-2-3 ignition, and recently the valves were set, and the oil changed on engine and gearbox. The alternator with voltage regulator has also just been replaced.

Renault used to be a real engine builder and Gordini has tackled the famous 1647cc alloy engine to get 90 hp out of it with low consumption. The head has a semi-spherical combustion chamber thanks to V-shaped valves with a central spark plug. Really out of the book. The engine from this TX has remarkable torque, it is even instinctively a fast car.

The Renault 16 was the car of the year in 1966. With a striking design and innovative thanks to the fifth door with fold-down rear seat, front-wheel drive, alloy engine with wet cylinder bushings and many more clever innovations. This mid-size car was technically far above most other mid-size competitors. Built for at least 13 years, and now there are almost no examples left, as rust was its biggest enemy in the lowlands.
