Beschreibung

There are few cars that better embody 1980s excess than the Porsche 930 Turbo with the optional Flachbau package. The Flachbau - or slant nose as it was known in the United States- was an option offered by Porsche’s Sonderwunsch (or Special Wishes) department to bring the aesthetics of a 930 more in line with those of the 935 endurance racecar, which was dominating on tracks around the world. Porsche began offering this unique front-end treatment around 1981, but as it was through the Special Wishes department, only the company’s most well-connected clients could place an order of this sort. That was ok, though, as the Flachbau bodywork commanded a near 50% premium on top of the standard price for a 930 Turbo.

This 1985 930 Turbo S was ordered from the factory with the flat-nose bodywork, painted in Black with a matching black leather interior. It was delivered new to Hamburg, Germany, and in the mid-1990s, was imported to the United States via Texas. The car lived in the United States for ten years, residing in both Missouri and Massachusetts before going back across the pond to Germany once again in 2006. Presenting in exceptional condition, the car has received some paint work but never a full re-spray, and it recently underwent a thorough paint correction prior to sale. Sitting on a set of original RUF 5-spoke wheels, these, too, have been completely refurbished with silver-painted centers and polished lips. Sitting out the back is a custom-made quad-tip exhaust, which is a signature 930 Turbo S piece that was painstakingly replicated during the engine rebuild, as Porsche no longer makes this piece.

The black leather interior has received some upgrades over the years but all of them are high-quality and period-correct. The first thing you notice when you swing open the door is the two Recaro Classic seats in place of the standard Porsche units. These seats offer better bolsters, improved comfort, and power adjustability on top of the thigh bolster. Additionally, the 3-spoke Italvolanti steering wheel was ordered through Sonderwunsch, and the gauge cluster has been upgraded with a large boost gauge to the right of the speedometer and an air-fuel gauge in the lower dash binnacle. Although it isn’t known when some of these upgrades were made, they are all era-appropriate and don’t look out of place in the cabin of this 930.

Powered by the same 3.3-liter air-cooled single turbocharged flat-6 as the regular 930, Flachbau cars were almost always upgraded to “WLS” specifications. WLS is the abbreviation of Werksleistungssteigerung, which translates to Works Performance Increase, and was the factory tuning package that could be specified on RoW 930s. This increased power from 296 horsepower on the standard car to 325, and torque increased from 304 to 319 lb-ft. It also gave the car quad exit exhaust and an additional oil cooler to handle the additional power. Open the rear bonnet on this car and you can tell that it recently received a complete rebuild to extremely exacting standards. The engine bay is incredibly clean and looks better than when it came out of the Porsche factory. In the last year alone, more than €100,000 was spent on restoration work - predominately at Roitmayer Motor Sport in Munich, Germany. In addition to the engine rebuild, this 930 received performance cams, a KKK TTE550 turbocharger and custom headers and exhaust. A recent dyno run showed a horsepower rating of 412 hp (418 PS) and the addition of a modern turbo means that power comes on in a more linear way than on the original 930 making the car far more enjoyable to drive. This is emphasized even further by installing a new Drexler limited slip differential and a sport clutch and flywheel for the car’s 4-speed manual gearbox.

The Porsche 930 Turbo is a legend in its own right, but if you really want to stand out, there is nothing that does the job better than a 930 Turbo S Flachbau. Not only is this example one of the rare few with a factory-installed slant nose, but with the recent engine work by marque specialists, it is sure to be one of the best driving anywhere. Offered with an enormous stack of invoices, this 930 Turbo S Flachbau is not one to miss.
