Beschreibung

The Fiat X1/9 represents the culmination of a model that was both revolutionary and iconic in the realm of compact sports cars. Introduced in 1972 and produced until 1989, the X1/9 was designed by Italian styling house Bertone and engineered to combine practicality, affordability, and enjoyable driving dynamics. One of the X1/9's defining features is its mid-engine layout, a rarity in affordable cars of its era. By placing the engine behind the driver and ahead of the rear axle, the X1/9 achieved a near-perfect weight distribution, translating into great handling and cornering stability. The car's angular, wedge-shaped design was strikingly modern when it debuted, with clean lines, pop-up headlights, and a removable targa top that allowed for open-air driving. Bertone branding was prominent in later years as Fiat handed over full production to the design firm in the early 1980. The X1/9 was powered by a 1.5 litre inline-four engine, producing around 75 horsepower. While modest by today's standards, the lightweight construction (approximately 2,100 pounds) ensured nimble performance and responsive handling. A five-speed manual transmission added to the driving engagement, making the X1/9 a joy on winding roads. Despite its sporty nature, the X1/9 was remarkably practical. It featured two luggage compartments-one in the front and one in the rear-making it more versatile than many other sports cars of its time. The removable targa roof panel could be stowed neatly in the front boot, ensuring an open-air experience without sacrificing space.

First registered on 29th July 1988 this Bertone built Fiat X1/9 presents in delightful condition. The red coachwork is largely original as is the grey velour interior, both are in very good order. The engine starts immediately when requested and we are advised this Fiat drives with no known faults. The owners' manuals are present as are two sets of keys. There is a significant history file with this low mileage X1/9 confirming that this has clearly been a well looked after car. Also supplied is a V5 registration document and a current MoT test certificate valid until 3rd July 2025. The Fiat X1/9 remains a desirable classic, with owners appreciating its unique combination of affordability, Italian flair, and mid-engine precision. Though production ended in 1989, the X1/9 continues to captivate with its timeless appeal and connection to a great era of sports car design. Consigned by Stewart Banks
